GIH Social Determinants of Health Audioconference Series

When:

Friday, February 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern/1:00 p.m. Central/Noon Mountain/11:00 a.m. Pacific

Who:

  • Ana Marie Argilagos, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Dan Lurie, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
  • Rachel Thornton, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

What:

The mission of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to increase home ownership, support community development, and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination. HUD is increasingly involved in efforts to help nurture healthier, more inclusive communities, using housing as a platform to provide opportunities for people of all ages, incomes, and racial/ethnic groups to live, work, and learn together.

On this audioconference, funders learned about HUD’s approach to creating sustainable communities, which marks a shift in the agency’s spending, policies, and programs. The call also explored how health funders might collaborate with HUD on local and regional planning efforts to improve community and environmental health in rural, urban, and suburban areas.
