The Challenge of a Healthier Louisiana: Tackling Obesity through Collective Impact Grant Making and What We Learned Along the Way

Michael Tipton
President
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation

In 2012, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation launched a three-year, 300+ partner, $27 million collective-impact grant program designed to tackle obesity issues in Louisiana. “The Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana” achieved results that—for large scale, long-term grants—are pretty revolutionary. The foundation is ready to share the results of this commitment, lessons learned, and how this work impacted the foundation’s grantmaking, as well as its thinking about what it takes to truly tackle long-term health and quality of life issues through collective impact grantmaking and philanthropy.
