GIH’s programming is designed by a six-member team of Program Directors. Their work includes program development, analysis and writing, strategic advice, and external relations, all designed to offer GIH stakeholders a variety of educational opportunities related to health issue areas. GIH Program Directors typically manage two to three health-related issue areas. From year to year, these issue focus areas may shift, depending on health landscape, emerging trends, and policy needs. GIH seeks a dynamic professional who enjoys delving into different health issue areas and quickly becoming a content expert. Program directors are eager to share knowledge and information with a variety of stakeholders, ranging from foundation staff and trustees to policymakers, health practitioners, and researchers.

A successful Program Director candidate has at least five years of work experience in a nonprofit, government agency, or foundation with work related to health. This talented professional has experience designing programs for audiences that range from large annual conferences to small regional meetings; facilitating discussions; and working with logistical and operational staff. In addition, the candidate has excellent policy and research analysis skills, with a keen ability to synthesize information and summarize it for practical implications, both in written and verbal communication. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to naturally network and engage with different stakeholders, and make meaningful connections between issue areas, people, and practices.

Core Responsibilities

Program Development: Formulate and execute long-range strategies for creatively sharing information with the staff and trustees of foundations and corporate giving programs.

  • Plan educational and informative stakeholder meetings, organize webinars, convene funder networks and e-forums, and oversee annual conference sessions related to health issue areas
  • Maintain web pages on key issue areas
  • Produce educational programming (annual conference sessions, meetings, publications, webinars, podcasts) on a wide range of topics, spanning an evolving and ever broadening definition of health

Analysis and Writing: Research and write about public health and health policy issues and philanthropic programs for grantmaking and other professional audiences.

  • Track trends in the field of health philanthropy
  • Highlight emerging issues that would benefit from philanthropic support
  • Promote and disseminate best practices
  • Investigate different ways that philanthropy may address health issues
  • Create reports and extended papers that aggregate information and offer health issue area solutions

Strategic Advice: Respond to grantmakers’ requests for information and ideas, providing timely advice and assistance on both programmatic and operational issues.

  • Provide strategic counsel and guidance
  • Support and guide newly established foundations

External Relations: Represent GIH at public functions as needed to communicate about the organization and the work of health philanthropy. Give presentations on topics of expertise.

  • Convene and cultivate a big tent of funders with a wide variety of interests and perspectives
  • Create vehicles funders can use to exchange ideas, approaches, and strategies (networks, learning communities, e-forums)
  • Collaborate with other philanthropy-serving organizations on cross-cutting issues
  • Illustrate the work of health philanthropy to other sectors
  • Facilitate partnerships between philanthropy and those who work in intersecting fields (education, housing, etc.)

Qualifications:

A graduate degree in a health-related field is strongly preferred, and priority will be given to candidates with at least five years of work experience in health-related areas. Candidates should have: a proven track record of independent program development, excellent writing skills, the ability to work independently as part of a team of professionals, substantive expertise in one or more areas of health, and a willingness to tackle specific issues that are a priority for GIH. The position reports to the Vice President for Program and Strategy.   

Compensation 

GIH offers a competitive salary with a very generous benefits package. 100 percent employer paid medical, dental, and vision premiums are offered to full-time employees. Commuter benefits, retirement benefits, and supplemental insurance are all offered to employees. 

FSLA Status 

This is an exempt position and therefore not eligible for overtime pay. 

ADA Specifications

This position is primarily sedentary in nature and may require the ability to bend and lift small items.
