Position Summary
 
Under the direction of the Director of Public and Patient Engagement, Engagement Officers promote engagement in research within PCORI and the broader research community.  Key functions of the Engagement Officer are to collaborate across the organization to support engagement in research;  develop tools and guidance to support meaningful engagement in research; identify promising practices in engagement within the PCORI research portfolio; rapid cycle design and trial of strategies; and promote and advance the science of engagement in PCORI research and publicly.
In addition, the Engagement Officer collaborates with Research Programs, in particular, on projects related to serious and advanced illness care and treatment. The Engagement Officer works with Program Directors, Program Officers, Program Associates and related staff, to assist in management of the portfolio to ensure meaningful and ongoing patient and stakeholder engagement throughout the course of their research projects.   

For the purposes of this job description, engagement is defined as broad involvement of patients, family and caregivers, clinicians, payers, employers, and other members of the public as members of interdisciplinary research teams participating in the planning, conduct, and dissemination.

Qualifications:

Required Skills

  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; collegial, energetic, able to develop productive relationships with colleagues, awardees, consultants, external funders, and others who contribute to program development and management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public presentations. Experience in the development of tools and guidance to support engagement desired.
  • Ability to work independently and to manage projects and people
  • Ability to travel, as required, including site visits and representing PCORI at external meetings
  • Understanding of the research process from generating a research question to dissemination
  • Broad knowledge and appreciation of patient-centeredness and patient/stakeholder engagement practices
  • Broad knowledge in health policy, healthcare systems organization and structures and payment policies

 

Required Experience

  • Master’s degree required, preferably in a health-related area (e.g., MPH, MPA, MPP, MSN, or MBA)
  • Familiarity with Comparative Effectiveness Research
  • Minimum of 3-5 years relevant patient/public engagement experience. More experience preferred. Experience may include:
    • Involvement in patient/caregiver or other stakeholder advocacy organizations or health policy organizations that have implemented patient/researcher partnerships and training.
    • Healthcare professionals such as nurses, physician assistants, or other front line staff who have championed patient- and family-centered care and systems improvement 
    • Leaders from patient and family  or community  advisory councils skilled  in working directly with clinicians, health systems and researchers
    • Experience in patient engagement in meaningful use, data networks, patient-reported outcome development, development of quality metrics, data privacy issues and other data research infrastructure development
    • Experience with management of or participation in grant or contract awards focused on community or patient/stakeholder engagement
