Investing in Opportunities and Assets: Lessons from the South for the Nation

August 19, 2013

Philanthropic organizations have important opportunities to make a difference in the South, and in the process, provide important lessons for the nation. To identify these opportunities, GIH convened philanthropic, civic, academic, and nonprofit leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities for philanthropy to promote health and equity in the region. This report summarizes key themes and ideas that surfaced in the meeting, and identifies promising approaches for building the capacity of the nonprofit sector to promote the health of vulnerable communities in the South.

This report, based on a meeting funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, was written by Brian D. Smedley of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, and supported by funding from the Aetna Foundation.
