Creating a Healthier School Environment
GIH Healthy Eating/Active Living Audioconference Series
When: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central / 12:00 p.m. Mountain / 11:00 a.m. Pacific
Who: Lindsey Turner, Ph.D., Bridging the Gap
Debbie Watson, Winter Park Health Foundation
What: The Child Nutrition Act of 2004 required schools to develop and implement wellness policies by the 2006-07 school year, and most did. But they have had little impact, and many students still have easy access to unhealthy foods and beverages and few opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day.
On this call, Dr. Lindsey Turner of Bridging the Gap, a research program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, reviewed results from one of the most comprehensive studies to date of health-related policies and practices in U.S. elementary schools. Topics covered included school meals, competitive foods and beverages (items sold outside of the federally reimbursable meal program), and physical activity and physical education. Policy opportunities for funders were identified for each.
Next, Debbie Watson of the Winter Park Health Foundation shared her experience as a grantmaker working with local schools to promote healthy eating and active living among students.
