GIH Announces New Board Members
November 17, 2009--Grantmakers In Health (GIH) is pleased to announce the addition of Anne Beal (Aetna Foundation), Billie Hall (Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans), Chet Hewitt (Sierra Health Foundation), Anne Warhover (The Colorado Health Foundation), and Wendy Wolf (Maine Health Access Foundation) to its board of directors. Their board terms begin after the
GIH Annual Meeting on Health Philanthropy, March 10-12, 2010.
Dr. Beal, an expert on health disparities and children’s health, was appointed president of the Aetna Foundation in July 2009. Previously she directed The Commonwealth Fund’s Program on Health Care Disparities. Earlier in her career she served as an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School.
Ms. Hall is president and CEO of Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans. Her health care and public health career includes work on school health education, women’s health, community health planning, and health policy. Previously she served as vice president for public affairs at the Kansas Health Institute where she developed the organization’s health policy agenda.
Mr. Hewitt is president and CEO of the Sierra Health Foundation and has over two decades of experience in policy development, advocacy, and human service innovation. Prior to joining the foundation, Mr. Hewitt directed the Alameda County Social Services Agency. He also served as an associate director at the Rockefeller Foundation and was awarded a Children and Family Fellowship by The Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Ms. Warhover is president and CEO of The Colorado Health Foundation and guides its efforts around access to care and healthy living. She also manages the foundation’s ownership interest in Denver’s HealthONE hospital system. Prior to joining the foundation, Ms. Warhover served as president and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership, a business membership and civic organization.
Dr. Wolf is president and CEO of the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) and leads the organization’s efforts to promote access to comprehensive quality health care and improve the health of Maine residents. Prior to joining MeHAF, Dr. Wolf served as a senior advisor to administrators of the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She also practiced as a pediatric cardiologist.
The GIH Board of Directors also reappointed Missouri Foundation for Health President and CEO James Kimmey as chair, and Philip Belcher, president of the Mary Black Foundation, treasurer. Ann Monroe, president of the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York, will serve as vice chair, and Sam Karp, vice president of programs at the California HealthCare Foundation, will assume to role of secretary. Gail Christopher, vice president for programs at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, was appointed member-at-large. Moving off the GIH board in 2010 are Kim Moore of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and Susan Zepeda of the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
