SUMMARY:Equitable and Sustainable Children’s Oral Health Services in the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:While the United States has seen improvements in children’s oral health in recent years\, almost half of children continue to experience dental cavities\, which are associated with disruption in learning and increased risk for a lifetime of systemic inflammatory health conditions. Notable inequities persist among school-aged Latino and African American children. Effective school-based oral health services can be targeted to high-need populations\, and philanthropy can support the policy development and technical assistance needed to establish more equitable and sustainable care. \nA robust conversation was held about an exciting effort to expand oral health services to rural and underserved communities in North and South Carolina\, through a school-based model supported by three foundations and their state partners. Speakers included Hannah Benson of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation\, Katie Eyes of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation\, Amy Martin of the Medical University of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine\, and Stacy Warren of The Duke Endowment. \nResources: \n\nPresentation by Amy Martin\nA Technical Assistance Curriculum for Expanding Sustainable School-Based Oral Health Programs in the Carolinas’ Dental Safety Net\nEvaluation of a Comprehensive Oral Health Services Program in School-Based Health Centers\n\nWebinar Recording:

SUMMARY:Centering Health and Racial Equity: It’s an Inside Job
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 18 months\, foundations and corporate giving programs have announced unprecedented commitments to health equity and racial justice. Many have begun to thoughtfully assess their own organizations in order to better understand how their internal practices and policies have either impeded or facilitated equity and justice. Their actions are being carefully observed and documented in reports such as the 2020 Diversity Among Philanthropic Professionals Report and Mismatched: Philanthropy’s Response to the Call for Racial Justice\, which highlight key lessons and share timely recommendations. While philanthropic institutions are at different points on their equity journeys\, one thing is clear: lasting\, permanent change requires starting from the inside. \nSpeakers included  Jo Carcedo of Episcopal Health Foundation and Barbara Leonard of the Maine Health Access Foundation\, who delved into their perspectives and shared their long-term plans\, promising processes\, and lessons learned in centering equity and racial justice at their foundations. \nRecording: \n \n
