SUMMARY:Strengthening Maternal Mental Health in Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted with Funders for Maternal Mental Health and Grantmakers In Health.  \nRural communities face distinct maternal mental health challenges—driven by workforce shortages\, hospital and obstetric unit closures\, long distances to care\, and under-resourced health and behavioral health systems. These barriers are compounded by systemic inequities\, including poverty\, insurance gaps\, racial and geographic disparities\, and chronic underinvestment in rural health infrastructure and communities. As a result\, fragile rural health delivery systems often struggle to identify and address maternal mental health needs. \nAt the same time\, new federal and state activity\, including the Rural Health Transformation Program\, is creating important openings to rethink how maternal health and mental health services are financed\, integrated\, and delivered in rural settings. \nWe explored how maternal mental health is showing up across rural communities\, how states are engaging in this new initiative\, and where philanthropic strategies can play a meaningful role to advance maternal mental health in rural communities. The conversation drew on perspectives from national rural health infrastructure\, community-based organizations\, and physician-led public health work across rural regions of the country. Speakers reflected on persistent gaps and promising approaches\, and highlighted strategies funders can support to strengthen rural delivery systems and promote more accessible\, culturally responsive care for mothers and families. The session concluded with time for funder discussion and questions.\nSpeakers Included: \n\nChris Salyers\, Director of Programs and Evaluation\, National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health\nKenia Pinela\, Director of Programs and Innovation\, Valley Settlement\nDr. Erica Quinn Thompson\, Founder and Executive Director\, Magnolia Medical Foundation\n\n
