Every year\, GIH brings together the bright minds\, seasoned experts\, and innovative practitioners working in health philanthropy to discuss the important issues facing the field. \n\n\nReporting from the 2026 Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy\n\n\n\n\nPart 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 \n\n\nLife\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Health\nTwo hundred and fifty years ago America’s founders came together to say the current system of government was not working for them. This act sparked the birth of a new nation founded on principles of freedom\, equality\, and democracy. The document they signed clearly articulates the founders’ belief in the right to life\, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Health—and the ability to lead a healthy and productive life—is deeply intertwined with these ideals. Today\, cuts to critical health and social programs; attacks on freedom of speech; threats to non-profit organizations; and federal overreach threaten our fundamental freedoms as well as our health and well-being. The 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding is an ideal backdrop for us to come together and craft a vision for health that works for everyone. \nReflections on the Theme \nPlenary Session Videos\nLife\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Health  \nThe opening plenary of the 2026 GIH Annual Conference began with Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk\, Speaker of the House for the Maryland General Assembly. Then featured a panel discussion with: \n\nRichard Besser\, President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\nCara V. James\, President and CEO of Grantmakers In Health and\nDr. Ibram X. Kendi\, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Howard University.\n\n \nTerrance Keenan and Andy Hyman Awards Luncheon \nTune in to be inspired by Gladys Vega of La Colaborativa as she was honored with the 2026 Andy Hyman Award for Advocacy and Mark Constantine of the Dogwood Health Trust as he was honored with the 2026 Terrance Keenan Leadership Award. \n \nGetting in Formation: Organizing for the Future \nDeepak Bhargava\, President of the Freedom Together Foundation\, DaMareo Cooper\, Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy\, and Joe Goldman\, President of the Democracy Fund delve into a discussion on the need for organizing. \n \nHow Can I Reach You? Building Trust Through Communication to Enable Change \nHow we share information\, tell stories\, and communicate across movements shapes our collective power to create change. As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Medicare and Medicaid Act and the start of a new administration\, as well as reflect on 20 years of rebuilding since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita\, the power of partnership stands as a key force for improving health for all. \nThe 2025 GIH annual conference was an opportunity for funders to collectively explore innovative\, multisectoral partnerships at the local\, state\, and national levels that advance health and equity. Foundations are well-positioned to help. In this preconference session\, we will hear from leading thinkers and doers about their vision for a redesigned delivery system and prospective roles grantmakers can play in accelerating change. This is a unique opportunity for funders to talk with their colleagues about their current challenges\, concrete next steps\, and promising new directions for the field of health philanthropy. \nReading for Life: Early Childhood Literacy and Health\nFor far too many children\, particularly those in low-income families\, learning to read is a major challenge\, placing them at increased risk for high school dropout\, criminal activity\, incarceration\, unemployment\, and long-term poverty. Reading ability is also the strongest individual predictor of adult health status and is often related to child health issues such as developmental problems and frequent school absence due to illness. Nearly all children can become successful readers\, especially when they receive targeted\, developmentally appropriate help early on. In this preconference session\, we will examine research linking early childhood literacy to health; promising interventions involving children\, parents\, teachers\, and pediatricians; and policy changes that would help move this work forward. \n\nPLENARY SESSIONS \nIs Equity an Attainable Health System Goal?\nWednesday\, March 7: 4:30 – 6:00 P.M.\nDifferences\, disparities\, and inequities are found throughout thehealth care system. Many provisions of the Affordable Care Act are built around the goal of promoting equity. Alan Weil\, executive directorof the National Academy for State Health Policy\, will address the challenges of defining\, promoting\, and achieving an equitable health system. He will draw upon his work with states pursuing health equity\, as well as national experience working with health system leaders. \nLeading with Equity for America’s Tomorrow\nThursday\, March 8: 9:00 – 10:00 A.M.\nGuided by a commitment to advance economic and social equity\, Angela Glover Blackwell founded PolicyLink in 1999. Now the organization is a leading voice that uses public policy to improve access and opportunity for low-income people and communities of color. He coaches a wildly popular baseball league that has served thousands of teens and spends a lot of time in the city’s neighborhoods with young people. \nMr. Lewis has been widely honored for his commitment to Boston and to the youth of the city. Of his role as a philanthropist\, Mr. Lewis has said\, “We can’t just be good at this work. We have to be great at it. We dare to use the word ‘impact’ because at the end of the day\, our grantmaking and civic leadership should build bridges\, change lives\, and change communities. Impact is our legacy.
