DESCRIPTION:2018 Agenda \nWashington Marriott Georgetown | Washington\, DC \nEach fall\, GIH hosts the Fall Forum\, designed for funders with a strong interest in health policy. The meeting is an excellent opportunity for grantmakers to get up-to-speed on current issues\, interact with leading thinkers\, and connect with one another. Funders return home with a deeper understanding of important topics\, an introduction to some key players\, and ideas about how to apply what they’ve learned to their work. \nThe first day of this year’s Fall Forum\, November 14\, allowed staff and trustees of foundations and corporate giving programs to learn more about upcoming census activities and share practical strategies for philanthropic involvement to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 census. The second day of the meeting\, November 15\, explored how funders can apply the latest thinking on racial and gender equity\, toxic stress\, and resiliency to evidence-based approaches to youth violence prevention. In addition\, Rev. Starsky D. Wilson\, President and CEO of the Deaconess Foundation\, delivered the sixth annual Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture. The final day of the Fall Forum\, November 16\, provided a thorough and thoughtful analysis of the prior week’s elections and their implications for health care access\, coverage\, and costs across the country. \nCount Us In! Roles for Health Funders in Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census\nWednesday\, November 14\n9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. \n\nThe decennial census has profound implications for the health and vitality of communities across the country. Results determine allocation of public sector resources in programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)\, dictate reapportionment of political representation at the federal and state levels\, and inform a host of private sector planning and investment decisions. Certain “hard to count” populations\, such as young children\, communities of color\, low-income households\, and people living in rural communities\, are particularly at risk for being undercounted. As discussions\, decisions\, and debates regarding the census accelerate\, health funders have begun to explore whether and how they should support census efforts. The first day of the Fall Forum allowed the staff and trustees of foundations and corporate giving programs to learn more about upcoming census activities and share practical strategies for philanthropic involvement. \nHope and Healing: A Public Health Approach to Youth Violence Prevention\nThursday\, November 15\n9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Meeting\n4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Reception \n\nViolence has a devastating impact on young people\, whether they are victims\, witnesses\, or perpetrators. In recent years\, efforts to curb youth violence have used a public health approach that addresses structural barriers that contribute to chronic violence\, and emphasizes community-level supports to strength youth and families. These efforts are increasingly informed by broader national conversations about policing\, trauma\, and gun violence. How do young people navigate these complex issues and define risk and safety? What are the restorative practices they need to heal from violence? How do we change the narrative about youth violence and rethink what it means to build healthy and safe communities? \nThe second day of the Fall Forum took an in-depth look at the underlying factors that drive youth violence and explore how funders can apply the latest thinking on racial and gender equity\, toxic stress\, and resiliency to evidence-based approaches to youth violence prevention. With an eye toward systems change\, participants discussed efforts to implement fair and effective school-based policies and programs\, meet the health and social service needs of youth at highest risk for violence victimization and perpetration\, and transform juvenile justice systems to improve youth outcomes. \nAll Eyes on the States: A Post-Election Analysis\nFriday\, November 16\n9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. \n  \nIn this time of fast-paced change and competing priorities\, funders need a timely and relevant breakdown of the current health policy situation. The third day of the Fall Forum will provide a thorough and thoughtful analysis of the prior week’s elections and their implications for health care access\, coverage\, and costs across the country. What are the challenges and opportunities on the horizon and the potential consequences for families\, nonprofits\, state budgets\, and federal health care programs? Are there proven mechanisms for getting accurate\, actionable information into the hands of state administrators and legislators that aids their decisionmaking processes? How can philanthropy best encourage civil discourse on health policy matters\, finding places of agreement and advancing shared goals?
