SUMMARY:2020 Fall Forum: Better Health\, Stronger Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Better Health\, Stronger Democracy explored how health funders are promoting civic engagement\, protecting voter rights\, and engaging in post-census electoral redistricting. \nBetter Health\, Stronger Democracy Agenda \nPost-Census Redistricting: Ensuring Fair Representation\nMonday\, November 16\, 3:00 – 4:30 pm ET\nThe redistricting process that takes place after each decennial census has profound implications for the fairness of representational democracy\, determining electoral districts for most federal legislators\, all state legislators\, and many local legislators. With the quality and accuracy of the 2020 census in question and procedures for apportionment under debate\, this redistricting cycle promises to be particularly controversial. This session described redistricting activities and timelines\, examine existing and emerging threats to fair representation\, and explore how philanthropic organizations can best inform and influence redistricting decisions to support historically underrepresented communities. \n\nDay 1 Opening Slides\nPresentation by Kathay Feng\nPresentation by Amy Dominguez-Arms\nPresentation by Regina Bell\n\nWebinar recording: \n \nPromoting Voter Engagement and Protecting Voter Rights\nThursday\, November 19\, 3:00 – 4:00 pm ET\nAlthough the COVID-19 pandemic has recently focused public attention on access to the ballot\, people of color have faced systemic barriers to voting since our nation’s founding. Political disenfranchisement results in a loss of power—the power to elect representatives with shared values and the power to advance policy priorities\, such as investments in education\, criminal justice reform\, safe and affordable housing\, and access to health care. This session reviewed effective strategies for increasing voter participation through integrated voter engagement\, policy advocacy\, and litigation; consider philanthropic trends in support for these activities; and explore the role of health funders in the civic engagement ecosystem. \n\nDay 2 Opening Slides\nPresentation by Alexis Anderson-Reed\nPresentation by Tanya Clay-House\n\nWebinar recording: \n \nAdvancing Health through Civic Engagement: Health Funders Weigh In\nFriday\, November 20\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET\nCivic engagement activities\, such as voting\, volunteering\, and community organizing\, are essential to the health of our democracy and a growing evidence base suggests these activities may also influence the health of individuals and communities. Health funders are increasingly recognizing that investments in civic engagement are necessary to advance population health goals related to health equity\, access to care\, and the social determinants of health. This facilitated discussion with health funders who have committed resources to civic engagement efforts explored why and how they have pursued these strategies\, review the processes used to make and monitor these funding decisions\, and consider the key lessons learned along the way. \n\nDay 3 Opening Slides\n\nWebinar recording:

SUMMARY:2020 Fall Forum: Food for a Healthier America
DESCRIPTION:Food for a Healthier America examined current food access and security policy\, the gaps and challenges laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic\, the opportunities for positive policy change\, and philanthropy’s role in creating a more equitable and just food system. \nFood for a Healthier America Agenda \nWhat Now? Opportunities to Improve Food Access and Security Policy\nMonday\, November 16\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET\nThe last year has seen significant challenges for communities and families being able to access healthy food. From efforts to reduce the federal food safety net to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the country is having to seriously examine its food policies. This session discussed the current state of federal food and nutrition policy\, the potential impact of the 2020 election on the policy agenda\, the implications for communities\, and the opportunities and challenges funders should be prepared to navigate moving forward into 2021 and beyond. \nPresentations: \n\nOpening Slides and Day 1 Overview\nPresentation by Stacy Dean\n\n \nAdvancing Together to Address Food Equity and Justice\nTuesday\, November 17\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET\nThe COVID-19 pandemic and the civil uprisings stemming from police violence have elevated the continued inequities in food access and security for communities of color. While the challenges these communities face are not new\, the events of 2020 have given these issues greater weight and urgency. Food is an urgent health challenge and an important social issue for Black\, Indigenous\, Persons of Color (BIPOC) communities. This session addressed the food needs of BIPOC communities; the opportunities to support equitable food policies; and ways philanthropy can authentically partner with BIPOC communities to champion policy changes\, both large and small\, that create a more equitable and just food system. \nPresentations: \n\nDay 2 Opening Slides\nPresentation by Kolu Zigbi\nPresentation by Ma’raj Sheikh\nPresentation by Michaele N. Turnage Young\n\n \nLearning from 2020: Investing in a Better Food System\nThursday\, November 19\, 1:00 -2:30 pm ET\nWhile it is easy to get lost in national trends and large systems change\, 2020 has laid bare the gaps in and inadequacies for our local and regional food systems. Whether it is the inability to transport healthy food to rural communities in need\, the challenges facing workers and smaller producers\, or examples of food waste\, it is apparent that investments are needed at the local level. This session focused on how funders of all sizes can move their grantmaking strategies further upstream to build a better system. \nPresentations: \n\nDay 3 Opening Slides\nPresentation by Richard Pirog\nPresentation by Abbey Piner\nPresentation by Marcus Coleman

SUMMARY:Health\, Housing\, Equity\, Race and Power Funders Convening
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Neighborhood Funders Group\, The California Endowment\, Colorado Health Foundation\, Ford Foundation\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Kresge Foundation\, Missouri Foundation for Health\, New York State Health Foundation\, Northwest Health Foundation\, Richmond Memorial Health Foundation\, and Shelterforce. \nHousing is one of the best-researched social determinants of health\, and housing interventions for low-income and communities of color have been found to improve health outcomes\, as well as prevent homelessness. Across the country\, community residents and institutions are collaborating\, organizing\, and passing policies to protect renters and preserve and expand affordable housing. Yet\, from rural to urban\, and from hot to cool markets\, low-income individuals and families continue to struggle. \nWhat role are health funders playing in strengthening the voice\, influence\, and power of low-income residents and communities of color at the local\, regional\, and state levels? How are health funders engaged with community members and advocates to create investment strategies designed to build capacity for coalition work\, advocacy\, organizing\, and community power\, positioning these communities to engage at a policy and systems change level for sustained impact? \nJoin us for this strategy session designed to continue conversations initiated at the Neighborhood Funders Group (NFG) session “Catalyzing a Movement for Health and Housing” at Grantmakers In Health’s 2019 annual conference in Seattle\, where nearly 90 funders attended a panel discussion on how philanthropy can invest in community housing solutions. \nMore Information and Registration
