SUMMARY:Funder Briefing and Conversation: USDA Summer Meals 2024
DESCRIPTION:More than 30 million children participate in school meal programs during the school year. However\, when schools are closed\, children lose access to these healthy meals and are at higher risk of food and nutrition insecurity. As a result\, for many children\, summer is the hungriest time of the year. Fortunately\, due to new bi-partisan legislation\, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has two new powerful tools—non-congregate summer feeding in certain rural areas and Summer EBT—to ensure every child gets the nourishment they need when school is out of session. Leaders from the field convened for a special funder briefing with opening remarks from Cindy Long\, Administrator of Food and Nutrition Service\, USDA\, to learn more about these new programs and to discuss how philanthropy can play a pivotal role in partnering with USDA to reduce childhood hunger during the summer months. Additional speakers included Alberto González\, Jr.\, Senior Advisor for External Engagement\, Food and Nutrition Service\, USDA. \nResources: \n\nBilingual videos in support of SEBT from USDA Secretary Vilsack and Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small:\n\nUSDA Secretary Vilsack – Summer EBT (English) – Share on X (Twitter)\nUSDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small (English) – Share on X (Twitter)\nUSDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small (Spanish) – Share on X (Twitter)\n\n\n\n\nEstimated Number of Summer EBT Eligible Children Who Currently Do and Do Not Receive SNAP or NAP\n(includes the # of eligible SEBT participants in each State and Territory)\nLetter to Philanthropic Leaders\nStates and Tribes Partner with USDA to Kick Off New Summer EBT Program\n(Announcement highlighting States\, Territories\, and Tribal Nations that have submitted their Notice of Intent (NOI) to implement SEBT in 2024)\nSummer EBT Outreach Toolkit\nSummer EBT Playbook\n(New resource developed by Code for America and No Kid Hungry in close consultation with USDA to assist State Agency Partners with SEBT implementation)\nSummer EBT Questions & Answers\nSummer Nutrition Programs Website\nUSDA Food and Nutrition Service homepage\nUSDA New Summer Grocery Benefit Program For Families\n\n\n\n\nRecording: \n \n  \n
