In this webinar\, participants discussed the devastating impacts natural disasters have on communities across the world\, focusing on examples of various natural disasters in the United States\, and what these disasters have meant or could mean for food security\, the environment\, and human health. \nTim Griffin discussed food producers’ and human health concerns related to increasing disasters\, such as severe storms and flooding\, and will outline what can be done to improve human health and protect the long-term viability of America’s food supply and ecosystems. Matteo Convertino discussed how mathematical models can be used to assess multi-disciplinary issues like the interrelationship between water\, human health\, and agriculture. He focused on his recent research on levees and how it the “One Health” concept–the close interrelation between human health and the environment. Susan Stover brought the dialogue to a concrete example by discussing how drought is impacting Kansas\, some innovative approaches to managing water use within agricultural communities\, and some of the policy changes that are needed at the federal level to support such efforts on the ground. \n

What does using the lens of the Commons mean when looking at water in the context of agriculture\, food and health? The first hour of the webinar featured 3 brief presentations and a Q&A session. For the last 30 minutes speakers step off the call and the funder-only discussion focuses on specific projects participants are funding\, considering funding and related questions. \nAmy Sapkota discussed some of the public health threats to our water supply associated with agriculture\, research in this area\, and possibilities for addressing these issues. Her talk made the links between agriculture\, water and public health. \nNot only do agricultural practices impact our water supply\, but our human sewage systems can impact agriculture. Steve Wing talked about human sewage waste\, how it is applied to agricultural land\, health impacts of the application\, and why we should be rethinking how we use potable water and deal with waste water. \nWhile there are various challenges at hand\, there are some innovative solutions underway. Martha Guzman-Aceves discussed issues in CA around agriculture\, water access\, and clean water as well as innovative initiatives at the government and coalition level to address these concerns. \n

The Diverse Elders Coalition represents millions of diverse older people age 50+ who are among those affected by the these expansions. They include the Health Insurance Marketplace\, the Medicaid expansion\, new benefits for elders 65+ on Medicare\, and a range of protections that make health care more accessible for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older people and older people of color. The number of uninsured older adults age 50-64 continues to rise—from 3.7 million in 2000 to 8.9 million in 2010. In addition\, people of color make up more than half of uninsured people in the U.S.— and research shows that people of color\, across the age span\, face significant disparities in physical and mental health. Additionally\, many people of color delay care because of potential medical costs and out of fear of discrimination or cultural incompetence from medical providers.These issues are especially true for LGBT people of color who face challenges on multiple aspects of their identities. The ACA has the ability to create a path to better health by offering more affordable health insurance options\, improving services and eliminating the usual obstacles. This webinar highlighted both national and state-specific examples on what is being done to ensure that older people know about the changes that are taking place under the ACA and how it affects them.

DESCRIPTION:With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Grantmakers In Health convened a learning community for funders who are currently supporting ACA outreach and enrollment efforts. \nOn this call\, participants learned about the new In the Loop initiative\, a private\, on-line community for individuals who are working to enroll consumers in health care. The site allows users to share experiences and problem-solve issues\, as well as to share success stories and lessons learned. Feedback to policymakers is provided on a timely basis\, to facilitate improvements in the enrollment process and to make things work as smoothly as possible. \nWe were joined by Amy Rosenthal of Community Catalyst and Mara Youdelman of the National Health Law Program (NHeLP).

Philanthropy has a critical role to play in these activities. \nWith support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Grantmakers In Health launched a learning community for funders who are currently supporting ACA outreach and enrollment efforts. This learning community was convened via conference call\, and intended to be a highly interactive discussion forum. We convened this group regularly as outreach and enrollment initiatives got underway and come up to speed. Funders came together to discuss challenges\, swap strategies\, and share insights. \nOur first call was held on Friday\, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central / 12:00 p.m. Mountain / 11:00 a.m. Pacific.
