Hartford Foundation \nWhen: \nWednesday\, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern/1:00 p.m. Central/Noon Mountain/ 11:00 a.m. Pacific \nWho: \n\nYanira Cruz\, President and CEO\, National Hispanic Council on Aging; and\nMichael Adams\, Executive Director\, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE)\n\nWhat: \nThe health coverage expansions under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will affect you\, your loved ones and your communities. The Diverse Elders Coalition represents millions of diverse older people age 50+ who are among those affected by the these expansions. They include the Health Insurance Marketplace\, the Medicaid expansion\, new benefits for elders 65+ on Medicare\, and a range of protections that make health care more accessible for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older people and older people of color. The number of uninsured older adults age 50-64 continues to rise—from 3.7 million in 2000 to 8.9 million in 2010. In addition\, people of color make up more than half of uninsured people in the U.S.— and research shows that people of color\, across the age span\, face significant disparities in physical and mental health. Additionally\, many people of color delay care because of potential medical costs and out of fear of discrimination or cultural incompetence from medical providers.These issues are especially true for LGBT people of color who face challenges on multiple aspects of their identities. The ACA has the ability to create a path to better health by offering more affordable health insurance options\, improving services and eliminating the usual obstacles. This webinar highlighted both national and state-specific examples on what is being done to ensure that older people know about the changes that are taking place under the ACA and how it affects them.

DESCRIPTION:With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Grantmakers In Health convened a learning community for funders who are currently supporting ACA outreach and enrollment efforts. \nOn this call\, participants learned about the new In the Loop initiative\, a private\, on-line community for individuals who are working to enroll consumers in health care. The site allows users to share experiences and problem-solve issues\, as well as to share success stories and lessons learned. Feedback to policymakers is provided on a timely basis\, to facilitate improvements in the enrollment process and to make things work as smoothly as possible. \nWe were joined by Amy Rosenthal of Community Catalyst and Mara Youdelman of the National Health Law Program (NHeLP).

Philanthropy has a critical role to play in these activities. \nWith support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Grantmakers In Health launched a learning community for funders who are currently supporting ACA outreach and enrollment efforts. This learning community was convened via conference call\, and intended to be a highly interactive discussion forum. We convened this group regularly as outreach and enrollment initiatives got underway and come up to speed. Funders came together to discuss challenges\, swap strategies\, and share insights. \nOur first call was held on Friday\, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central / 12:00 p.m. Mountain / 11:00 a.m. Pacific.

On this webinar we explored case studies from across the country that illustrate these strategies in action. Participants discussed how implementing prevention initiatives can improve health and contain costs\, how partnerships within and outside of the health field can help these efforts succeed\, and how foundations can use data from various sources to monitor the results and produce annual updates on the health of their communities.

DESCRIPTION:When: \nApril 15\, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern/2:00 p.m. Central/1:00 p.m. Mountain/Noon Pacific \nWho: \n\nSarah Bell\, 11th Hour Project\nDoug Gurian-Sherman\, Food & Environment Program\, Union of Concerned Scientists\nTerry Ingram\, Threlkeld Farm\nRebecca Spector\, The Center for Food Safety\n\nWhat: \nGenetically modified organisms (GMO) in food have potential implications for human health\, as well as negative effects on justice and food sovereignty. Two issues at the center of GMO debate are farmers’ ability to own seeds and consumers’ ability to know what is in their food. Despite these important issues\, it has not been easy to gain legislative traction around GMOs. This call shared a farmers’ perspective on GMOs\, highlighted where the science stands and described why GMOs are a concern for many working in public health. It debriefed outcomes from California’s Proposition 37 and highlight other GMO policy initiatives underway around the country. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how this issue exemplifies the possibilities and urgency for working together at the food-ag-health nexus.
