SUMMARY:Environmental Health\, Data Centers\, and the Case for Equity in the Southeast
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is hosted by Grantmakers In Health(opens in new tab) and co-sponsored by Appalachia Funders Network(opens in new tab)\, Blue Sky Funders Forum(opens in new tab)\, and Health and Environmental Funders Network(opens in new tab).  \nThe Southeast faces some of the nation’s most persistent environmental health challenges\, which are a product of decades of disinvestment\, discriminatory policy\, and regulatory failure. Now\, a new concern is emerging as the region has become a prime target for massive data center development. These facilities can use millions of gallons of water per day\, strain regional grids\, and compound existing health challenges. \nThis webinar opened with a grounding in the region’s environmental health landscape and what the data center build-out means for community health. The conversation then turned to a community leader\, whose work has reshaped national policy\, followed by a funder with investment in environmental health\, who shared what meaningful partnership and effective philanthropy looks like on the ground. \n\nPanelists Included: \n\n\nAdrienne Hollis(opens in new tab)\, Vice President\, National Wildlife Federation\nLaTricea Adams(opens in new tab)\, President\, Young\, Gifted and Green\nShilpa Joshi(opens in new tab)\, Director\, The Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund\n\n  \nResources from the webinar:  \n\nNew York Times\, “How Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes”(opens in new tab)\nYoung\, Gifted\, and Green\, “Community Benefits Agreement v.s. Community Benefits Ordinance”(opens in new tab)\nNAACP\, “Reducing the Harm of Data Centers”(opens in new tab)\nGallup\, “Americans Oppose AI Data Centers in Their Area”(opens in new tab)

SUMMARY:When “Exempt” Isn’t Enough: Medicaid Work Requirements and Maternal Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Invitation: When “Exempt” Isn’t Enough: Medicaid Work Requirements and Maternal Mental Health \nMedicaid work requirements are set to take effect soon\, creating a burdensome administrative process that most enrollees will need to navigate to keep their coverage. Certain populations are exempt from these requirements—including people who are pregnant or postpartum\, and those parenting a child age 13 or under. But exemption doesn’t mean automatic protection: in most cases\, individuals must actively prove or attest to their exempt status\, often through paperwork and verification processes that are easy to miss or misunderstand. \nOn paper\, this should mean pregnant\, postpartum\, and parenting individuals face no risk to their health insurance. In practice\, the complexity of federal rules—combined with the burden of proving an exemption rather than simply receiving one—will inevitably create confusion\, fear\, and unnecessary coverage loss for people who qualify. \nFor people who are pregnant\, postpartum\, or parenting\, this could mean slipping through the cracks of a system that assumes they’re protected but doesn’t make that protection easy to keep—worsening maternal mental health in the process. For people of childbearing age more broadly\, it could mean losing access to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy counseling that helps them achieve and maintain healthy pregnancies. Join Funders for Maternal Mental Health and Grantmakers In Health on October 14th from 2 pm – 3:15 pm ET / 11 am – 12:15 pm PT for a webinar on this timely topic. \nThe goals of this webinar are to: \n\nUnderstand who is exempt from Medicaid work requirements and how exemptions are verified;\nIdentify barriers that exempt pregnant individuals and parents may face in navigating the verification process;\nConsider how complex requirements can disproportionately affect certain families\, particularly those in need of mental health services and supports;\nExplore promising approaches in navigating these requirements and maintaining coverage; and\nDiscuss opportunities for funders to support policies\, practices\, and community-based approaches that help ensure exempt individuals and their families are not left behind.\n\nConfirmed Speakers: \n\nKelly Brittain\, Children’s Foundation of Michigan\nElisabeth Burak\, Georgetown University Center for Children and Families\nSarah Maresh\, Nebraska Appleseed\nDána Langord\, Village of Healing\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:GIH Health Policy Exchange 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register Agenda Sponsor Learn More \nRegardless of the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections\, the landscape of health policy in the United States will be shaped by recent political realities—and the stakes could not be higher. Against a backdrop of ongoing threats to Medicaid\, SNAP\, and the broader safety net\, rising challenges to democratic institutions\, and a public health infrastructure under strain\, philanthropy has a critical role to play in supporting communities\, and charting a path forward that alters systems and policies to ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to achieve their highest level of health. The 2026 Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Health Policy Exchange will provide space to assess the post-election environment\, identify where investment and action are most urgently needed\, and explore ways health funders can mobilize to advance health and well-being for all at the federal\, state\, and local levels. \nLauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture\nThe Health Policy Exchange features the Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture\, a lecture series established in honor of former GIH President and CEO Lauren LeRoy and her commitment to increasing communication between the worlds of philanthropy and policy.  Last year’s speaker was Keshia Pollack Porter(opens in new tab)\, Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. \nRegister now

SUMMARY:2027 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:The 2027 Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy\, will be held on June 28 – July 1\, 2027 in Chicago\, Illinois. \nFrom meetings to movements: transforming health\nForty-five years ago\, a small group of health funders came together to launch an organization to help them learn about important health issues and to learn from one another. Since then\, Grantmakers In Health has been helping funders learn\, connect\, and grow through educational programming like the annual conference. Together\, we have learned about the social drivers of health\, the role of structural and systemic barriers to health\, health inequities\, and how to be better philanthropic partners with the communities we seek to help. As a result\, health philanthropy has evolved\, and outcomes have improved. \nUnfortunately\, recent unprecedented actions at the federal level threaten the progress of the last few decades\, and countering these threats requires GIH and health funders to evolve once more. The moment requires us to develop new skills\, break out of our silos\, and work together in new ways. \nSubmit a Session Proposal!\nThe 2027 GIH annual conference is an important opportunity for health funders to come together to explore new ideas and innovative partnerships designed to help mobilize the field to achieve better health for all. GIH is looking for action-oriented session proposals that explore how funders are: \n\nResponding to the changing political and legal landscape\, including policy changes\, funding\, and access to health and social services;\nOrganizing and mobilizing within philanthropy to advance health and equity;\nStrengthening foundation governance and leadership in uncertain times;\nSupporting communications and narrative change work;\nImproving and reimagining our health system;\nEmpowering communities and fostering collaboration across sectors;\nResponding to continued attacks on health equity and diversity\, equity\, and inclusion;\nDefending against threats to philanthropic giving; and\nInvesting in innovative work in the Chicagoland region.\n\n\nLearn More Submit a Proposal \nContinue Learning from The Last Conference\nReports and plenary recordings from the 2026 conference are posted! Watch the Opening Plenary: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Health\, learn the importance of Getting in Formation: Organizing for the Future\, get inspired by the remarks from the Terrance Keenan and Andy Hyman Awards Winners\, and don’t miss the closing panel: How Can I Reach You?
