SUMMARY:Advanced Old Age in America: What Can We Count On?
DESCRIPTION:Grantmakers In Health(opens in new tab)\, Altarum Institute(opens in new tab)\, Grantmakers In Aging(opens in new tab)\, and National Coalition on Health Care(opens in new tab) cosponsored a roundtable discussion on health care reform and elderly Americans living with frailty in their last years. In particular\, the roundtable focused on the need to consider the distinct priorities and preferences of the old and frail\, as well as those of family members and caregivers\, as the nation considers a number of different strategies and policy changes to strengthen and streamline health care. \nThe roundtable addressed a number of questions\, including: \n\nHow serious are the shortcomings in services and the expected growth in costs as the population ages? How much time do we have to make arrangements for the coming increase in numbers?\nWhat should we promise to individuals living with frailty in old age and their families? How does this differ from the current trajectory?\nHalf of those who live past 85 years old will have cognitive failure. What health care\, social supports\, and financial arrangements would serve people touched by this challenging situation?\nWhich of the current reforms and trials offer prospects of moving us toward a workable set of solutions—that is\, more appropriate and desirable services\, at lower cost? There are opportunities for state\, regional\, and local funders to join this project and obtain state-specific estimates by funding oversamples for their states. SUMMARY:Healthy Food Choices in SNAP: Financial and Other Incentives to Change Purchasing Patterns
DESCRIPTION:**View the recorded archive of the event\, as well as presentation slides.** \nGrantmakers In Health and Altarum Institute cosponsored a roundtable discussion on encouraging healthy food choices focused on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)\, formerly the Food Stamp Program\, which is at the heart of the nation’s nutrition safety net\, serving more than one in seven Americans in 2013. \nThe roundtable examined innovative approaches\, including financial incentives\, to encourage healthy food choices by SNAP participants. Participants also examined the added economic benefit that can occur when more SNAP dollars are spent on local food and circulate in the local economy. Speakers from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation\, Altarum’s Center for Food Assistance and Nutrition\, the Fair Food Network\, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service discussed what is being tested and what is working in this critical effort to improve health status through healthier food purchases supported by SNAP. \n

The potential implications for the health care system\, as well as the elderly and their families\, will be enormous\, requiring that we consider innovative approaches to treating\, managing\, and preventing disease. A promising and innovative area that has already shown considerable potential and some success is strengthening the links between creativity\, health\, and aging. Research continues to find many positive health benefits for those who actively participate in creative arts programs\, both from a prevention perspective and for those afflicted with disorders and diseases that occur more frequently as we age. \nInnovative Crossroads: The Intersection of Creativity\, Health\, & Aging wase held on Wednesday\, May 1\, 2013 in Washington\, DC. A partnership of GIH with the National Center for Creative Aging\, Grantmakers In Aging\, Grantmakers in the Arts\, and the Global Alliance for Arts & Health\, this one-day meeting explored how creative expression can improve health outcomes for older Americans; the various types of promising programs; and the challenges and opportunities where funders can make a difference. The agenda included a number of knowledgeable experts and ample opportunity for funders to engage in active dialogue. Funding from the program will focus on building infrastructure and capacity to expand access to health care in underserved areas\, address behavioral health needs\, train community health workers\, and improve environmental health capacity and literacy in the region. On this webinar\, funders learned more about the opportunities to leverage the BP investment to promote health among those affected by the oil spill.

SUMMARY:Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): An Issue at the Heart of the Food/Ag/Health Nexus
DESCRIPTION:When: \nApril 15\, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern/2:00 p.m. Central/1:00 p.m. Mountain/Noon Pacific \nWho: \n\nSarah Bell\, 11th Hour Project\nDoug Gurian-Sherman\, Food & Environment Program\, Union of Concerned Scientists\nTerry Ingram\, Threlkeld Farm\nRebecca Spector\, The Center for Food Safety\n\nWhat: \nGenetically modified organisms (GMO) in food have potential implications for human health\, as well as negative effects on justice and food sovereignty. Two issues at the center of GMO debate are farmers’ ability to own seeds and consumers’ ability to know what is in their food. Despite these important issues\, it has not been easy to gain legislative traction around GMOs. This call shared a farmers’ perspective on GMOs\, highlighted where the science stands and described why GMOs are a concern for many working in public health. It debriefed outcomes from California’s Proposition 37 and highlight other GMO policy initiatives underway around the country. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how this issue exemplifies the possibilities and urgency for working together at the food-ag-health nexus.
