SUMMARY:Standing Together: Philanthropy's COVID-19 Relief Funds and Immigrant Communities
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees \nThe COVID-19 global pandemic has been one of the most consequential events in the last decade\, wreaking havoc on families\, communities\, and the economy. As businesses were forced to close or scale back\, wage and job loss hit brown and Black communities particularly hard\, including immigrants who are overrepresented in hospitality\, agriculture\, domestic work\, and other industries. In response to this economic crisis and the fact that the federal government does not provide pandemic benefits to undocumented families—despite their participation in the labor market—philanthropy and state and local governments stepped in to fill the gap. Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR) recently commissioned a study to analyze the efforts of philanthropy to support immigrant communities via relief funds. This webinar featured a dive into the findings and a discussion on how foundations can prepare for future relief efforts. Speakers included Sharon Bush of the Grand Victoria Foundation\, Alice Cottingham of Alice Cottingham & Associates\, Eric Edi of AFRICOM\, project consultant Althea Gonzalez\, and Laine Romero-Alston of Open Society Foundations. \nPlease visit GCIR’s resource page to access the report and webinar recording.

SUMMARY:The Power of Intergenerational Health and Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Intergenerational programs and strategies play a vital role in improving the health and well-being of individuals\, families\, and communities across the lifespan. The growing demand for these interventions is due in large part to their demonstrated ability to decrease social isolation and dispel ageism while improving physical activity\, nutrition\, vaccine acceptance\, and cognitive health. \nThis webinar explored how grantmakers can increase the impact of their investments by supporting multigenerational solutions. Speakers include Donna Butts of Generations United\, Tim Niyonsenga of Michigan Health Endowment Fund\, and Mary O’Donnell of RRF Foundation for Aging. \nRecording: \n \n  \nPresentations: \nGenerations United \nRRF Foundation for Aging \nResources: \nThe Power of Connecting Generations \nMaking the Case for Intergenerational Programs \nStaying Connected While Staying Apart \nGenerations United Podcast: Episode 19 Mary O’Donnell and Earnest Gonzales on The Benefits of Intergenerational Programs \nIntergenerational Solutions for Healthy Aging in Michigan \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nutrition Incentives: Lessons and Opportunities to Improve Healthy Food Access
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Sustainable Agriculture and Food System Funders \nAccess to healthy food is an important social determinant of health. Over the past decade\, nutrition incentive programs that match federal SNAP dollars to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables have grown rapidly and proven to be a critical pathway to improving healthy food access. New streams of federal support that require local matching funds coupled with a surge in SNAP enrollment during the pandemic have presented important opportunities for public-private partnership. \nThis webinar discussed how these effective nutrition incentive programs have enabled vibrant public-private partnerships across the country\, the current state of the field and research\, and the opportunities for health funders to leverage these opportunities to improve healthy food access. Speakers included Mini Kahlon of UT Austin Dell Medical School and Factor Health\, Erica Raml of Fair Food Network\, and Amy Yaroch of Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition. \nPresentation Slides: \nNutrition Incentives Presentation \nPresentation:

SUMMARY:Advancing Social Connections for All
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nIn recent decades\, rates of social isolation among people of all ages have soared\, with profound impacts on health and well-being. Far from being a personal choice\, social isolation stems from community designs and systemic injustices that keep people and neighborhoods apart. We must reshape our communities in ways that support meaningful social connection among residents\, improve trust between neighbors\, and strengthen an overall sense of belonging and community. \nA recent report by Healthy Places by Design\, Socially Connected Communities: Solutions for Social Isolation\, offers five recommendations for creating socially connected communities\, starting with public spaces\, transportation\, and housing. \nThis discussion covered how philanthropic leaders can support the redesign of community-level systems to advance meaningful social connections. Speakers included Amy Gorn of Mat-Su Health Foundation\, Sharon Roerty of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, and Risa Wilkerson of Healthy Places by Design.

SUMMARY:Preparing for the End of the Public Health Emergency: State Strategies for Coverage Retention
DESCRIPTION:The end of the COVID-19 federal public health emergency (PHE) presents the single largest health coverage transition event since the first open enrollment of the Affordable Care Act. Currently\, states are required to refrain from terminating Medicaid coverage based on a change of circumstance. Upon the end of the PHE (slated to expire on October 17\, 2021)\, states will resume their renewal processes for Medicaid enrollees\, generating an enormous redetermination event and leading to unprecedented system churn related to Medicaid coverage termination and eligibility transitions between Medicaid and the Marketplace. Given the dramatic increase in Medicaid enrollment during the pandemic\, the potential loss of coverage for millions of Americans is significant. This webinar explored the key issues that states will face at the end of the PHE and strategies that are being designed to ensure families no longer eligible for Medicaid will not go uninsured. Speakers included Patti Boozang of Manatt Health Strategies\, Sarah Hatton of the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services\, and Heather Howard of State Health and Value Strategies at Princeton University. \nPowerPoint Presentation: \nPreparing for the End of the Public Health Emergency State Strategies for Coverage Retention \nRecording:

SUMMARY:Engaging Faith Communities to Improve the Health and Well-being of Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:Faith leaders play a significant role in their communities\, offering comfort\, guidance\, and leadership to congregants and connecting community members to valuable health-related resources and information. Across the country\, clergy are leading local efforts to support their congregants and communities\, including many who are at high risk of COVID-19 infection\, but are understandably skeptical of the health care system. \nThis webinar discussed how the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC)\, by partnering with AARP and others\, has worked with faith leaders and community-based organizations in Louisville\, Kentucky to build trust in the health care system and improve health outcomes. Speakers included Reverend Adrian Baker of Christ Way Baptist Church\, Elder Angela Overton of C-TAC\, and Tihisha Rawlins of AARP. \nWebinar Recording: \n \nPresentations: \nC-TAC Powerpoint Presentation \nAARP Powerpoint Presentation \nAdditional Resources: \nC-TAC Blueprint: Faith Community Engagement

SUMMARY:Rural Health Leadership Group
DESCRIPTION:During this fourth conversation in the GIH leadership series on rural health\, we learned about key resources available for rural communities through the American Rescue Plan. \nChad Parker\, Acting Administrator for the Rural Housing Service at USDA Rural Development\, detailed RD’s Emergency Rural Health Care Grants. Although the due date for these funds is coming up on October 12\, many rural stakeholders can still field viable applications\, especially for Track 1 of the program. Chad also noted the availability of funds for refinancing single family home loans\, an important tool for rural families facing financial impacts of the pandemic. Funders could refer potential applicants and other stakeholders to their state’s Rural Development Director; there may also be ways funders could provide matching resources or support for the completion of applications. \nTom Morris\, Associate Administrator for Rural Health Policy at HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy\, discussed their upcoming $52 million funding opportunity for rural health workforce initiatives. Broadly\, the program will support cross-sector network development around healthcare workforce initiatives\, including tracks for CHWs\, paramedicine\, HIT/Telehealth\, and respiratory therapy/care coordination. ORHP is finishing the program design and rural stakeholders are invited to an outreach call on 9/29 (see flyer attached). We encourage interested funders to work with their constituents to begin assembling local partners and a governance structure as needed to support cohesive and effective networks. If you have suggestions about the design of this program\, feel free to share them with me and we will pass them along to ORHP. \nThis was the fourth in a series of ongoing discussions to improve health in rural communities. If you are interested in participating in this candid conversation\, please reach out to Eric Stockton at estockton@gih.org for more information.

SUMMARY:COVID-19’s Long Tail: Developing a Mental Health Strategy for Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Center for Disaster Philanthropy\, Council on Foundations\, Giving Compass\, National Center for Family Philanthropy\, New York Life Foundation\, and Philanthropy New York \nCOVID-19 is leaving a long tail of psycho-social impacts from the variety of losses that people have experienced during the pandemic\, such as death\, illness\, housing and job insecurity\, and absence of in-person treatment. Policymakers and funders need a sustained and intentional strategy to address these challenges as part of a holistic post-pandemic recovery.  On this webinar participants explored how funding is sensitive to the disparate impacts of COVID-19 and discuss ways that funders can be advocates for the mental health needs of individuals\, families\, and communities that have suffered multiple losses due to weather-related disasters\, pandemics\, and economic suffering. Speakers included Tanya Gulliver-Garcia and Sally Ray of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Heather Nesle of New York Life Foundation.  \nPowerPoint Presentation \nCDP-Mental-Health-Slide-Deck \nRecording

SUMMARY:Elevating Equity in Children and Families Grantmaking
DESCRIPTION:Many funders are interested in supporting health equity in their grantmaking directed to children and families. How can they put equity “front and center: in their work? What are the best ways to incorporate the views of parents and caregivers? In this on-demand webinar\, participants will hear about one funder’s efforts to ensure that all families have access to the resources they need to raise thriving children\, with a health equity lens at the center of their internal and external work. In particular\, participants will hear about a new study\, “Raising the Next Generation\,” which surveyed parents and caregivers directly about their aspirations for their children\, the challenges they face\, and what enables their families to thrive. The featured speaker is Kerry Anne McGeary\, Deputy Director in the Healthy Children and Families program unit at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

SUMMARY:Caring About Care Workers: Essential to the Future of Health
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic revealed both the power and the vulnerability of care workers as essential workers in our society. Through their largely invisible work\, these workers—who are often women of color and immigrants—support the health and quality of life of children\, older adults\, and people with disabilities\, while also allowing the families of those receiving care to remain in the workforce. Yet\, care workers’ low wages\, limited benefits\, and poor job quality put their health at risk and may limit their ability to play their crucial role in sustaining families\, communities\, and the economy. \nJoin us for an on-demand conversation featuring community-based leaders and funders about why investing in care workers is vital to the future of health and our economy. This panel also explores policy opportunities that can drive change in the nation’s pandemic recovery and innovative local practices that can lead to greater health\, racial\, and gender equity. Speakers include Nancy Maldonado of Chicano Federation of San Diego\, Teresita Sattar of Courage Co-op\, Jennette Shay of Price Philanthropies Foundation\, Aquilina Soriano of Pilipino Workers Center\, and Rachel Wick of Blue Shield of California Foundation. \nWebinar Recording:

SUMMARY:2021 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:2021 Agenda at a Glance \nPlenary and Quick Take sessions are available under ‘Webinars and Videos.’ \n\nCONFERENCE THEME: BUILDING A JUST AND EQUITABLE FUTURE\n2020 was a turbulent year—one which illustrated numerous inequities that inhibit our ability to achieve better health through better philanthropy. These disparities are directly related to the health care system\, our public health infrastructure\, and to the social and structural factors that drive health outcomes. The challenges highlighted over the last year provide an opportunity to reimagine and restructure the way we design and implement efforts to improve health outcomes\, and philanthropic institutions are well positioned to help lead the way. \nThis year’s annual conference will provide a space for health funders to come together and share how they responded to the challenges presented in 2020\, exchange lessons learned\, and discuss how to partner with allies to implement sustainable changes that lead to better health for all. The conference will also offer an opportunity to think critically and creatively about how foundations can continue to adapt to the changing landscape to build a more just and equitable future. \n\nSocial Media: \n

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Virtual Crisis Care: Rural Innovation to Mental Health Crisis Response
DESCRIPTION:About one in every 10 calls to law enforcement involves someone in a potential mental health crisis. In many communities across the country\, especially rural communities\, law enforcement are the only responder to these calls. However\, law enforcement officers often do not have the training or resources at hand to effectively help someone whose health and well-being are at stake due to mental health issues. This Quick Take will provide the nuts and bolts of how one state is piloting a statewide program to give rural law enforcement officers immediate access to mental health professionals using technology. \n \nThis session was designed by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and supported by Missouri Foundation for Health.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Shifting From Hate to Health: The Benefits of Leading From within Community
DESCRIPTION:The current social and political context fosters hate speech and acts of hate against Muslims and Jews. Islamophobia\, anti-Semitism\, and white nationalism are weapons of racism promoting fear and isolation and putting individuals and entire communities at risk for stress\, trauma\, isolation\, and poor health. By investing in organizations led by communities under attack—and through robust\, genuine\, and reciprocal relationships—grantee partners are shifting the focus from hate to health. In this Quick Take\, hear from Jewish and Muslim leaders\, and learn successful strategies to creating safer and more welcoming communities and drafting actionable steps for your organization. \n \nThis session was designed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation and supported by W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Measuring What Matters to Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Many existing quality measures target disease-specific\, intermediate clinical outcomes that are not meaningful to people with complex care needs and do not effectively evaluate what is important to people. With funding from The John A. Hartford Foundation\, The SCAN Foundation\, and The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation\, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) developed an approach to individualized measurement that focuses on goals oriented towards “what matters” for a person’s health and lifestyle. This Quick Take will provide an overview of the approach—known as person-driven outcomes—and discuss how incorporating patient-driven\, specific\, and measurable goals into clinical workflows can inform a new approach to measuring health outcomes for this population. \n \nThis session was designed by Grantmakers In Health and supported by Grantmakers In Aging.
