What are the competencies for primary care and behavioral health providers in the integrated care setting? What workforce skills and structures best support collaborative patient-centered care? This webinar discussed the latest research on workforce competencies and shared examples of successful integrated care practices. Questions were posed about the ways philanthropy can help develop and maintain a skilled integrated care workforce. Speakers included Benjamin Miller of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Laura Galbreath of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration−Health Resources and Services Administration Center for Integrated Health Solutions. \nRelated Content\n\nPresentation_Integrated Care: Building a Skilled Workforce – PDF document\, 3209 KB

SUMMARY:2015 GIH Annual Conference: Call for Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Pathways to Health\nOne of the most exciting things about working in health philanthropy today is witnessing the plethora of strategies that health funders have at their disposal. Most grantmakers share a similar vision: for individuals\, families\, and communities to achieve health\, resilience\, healing\, and well-being. But there are many routes to that destination. By confronting upstream and downstream issues\, funders can enhance prevention and wellness at the individual and community level\, improve access to quality health care across all stages of life\, empower consumers\, and advance health equity. \nFunders have many tools at their disposal to achieve these goals. They can experiment with many tactics\, including convening\, grantmaking\, investing\, and policy change. And they can work with an ever-expanding field of allies and partners\, against the backdrop of this nation’s rapidly changing demographics. Although these varied approaches may seem scattershot to some\, they all help create pathways to better health and health care. \nGrantmakers In Health (GIH) has long believed that health philanthropy’s diverse voices and viewpoints deepen our understanding of health and strengthen our ability to fashion effective solutions. Our 2015 annual conference will be a time to weave together the various threads of philanthropy’s work. We are looking for sessions that explore how to act upon broad definitions of health\, embrace new players\, integrate competing approaches\, leverage the assets of different sectors\, and accelerate change. \nWe welcome proposals for: \n\nCall for Sessions Instructions for Breakout Sessions\n\nPDF Format Call for Sessions Instructions for Site Visits\n\nPDF Format Call for Sessions Instructions for Film Screenings\n\nProposals must be submitted by July 25\, 2014. GIH’s Call for Sessions process is entirely Web-based\, and we will not accept proposals via fax\, mail\, or e-mail. \nSubmit proposals here. We recommend using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox when accessing the Call for Sessions site. You will be required to create a username and password to start the process. \nIf you have questions or would like assistance in designing your proposal\, please contact Kate Treanor at ktreanor@gih.org or 202.452.8331.

SUMMARY:Outreach and Enrollment Learning Community - June
DESCRIPTION:This month’s call was an exchange of ideas on grantmaker roles in outreach and enrollment going forward. Questions were posited for open discussion: How are grantmakers seeing their roles change or evolve\, if at all\, as we plan for the next round of open enrollment? Will grantmakers continue to support outreach and consumer assistance broadly\, or hone in on particular populations or programs? What is happening during the interim enrollment period? How are grantmakers incorporating lessons from the first round of outreach into their work? To what extent are funders changing or broadening grantmaking strategies in this area (for example\, by developing new partnerships\, undertaking advocacy\, or providing public-sector support)? \nRelated Content\n\nPresentation: Outreach and Enrollment Community – June – PDF document\, 185 KB

SUMMARY:Optimal Healing Environments: Creating a Culture of Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Many are seeking a more coordinated system of care that focuses on the person as a whole and addresses the full range of physical\, emotional\, social\, spiritual\, and environmental aspects of health. Transforming health care from a sickness model to a wellness model requires an understanding of how healing occurs among individuals\, communities\, and health care systems. What are the essential elements to create and sustain a healing environment? How can health care organizations successfully integrate and measure wellness approaches? This webinar featured organizations that have adopted a holistic healing framework and discussed ways philanthropy can help optimize wellness and prevention. Speakers include Bonnie Sakallaris of the Samueli Institute and Courtney Baechler of the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing at Allina Health. \nRelated Content\n\nPresentation: Optimal Healing Enviroments: Creating a Culture of Wellness – PDF document\, 3284 KB

SUMMARY:Supporting Local Food Policy to Create Sustainable Access to Healthy Food
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders \nAs funders work to increase access to healthy food in communities\, the need to invest in a robust local food system continues to grow. If sustainable change is to occur\, the policies that govern the production and distribution of food at the local level must be aligned to support the flow of healthy fresh foods to the communities most in need. This webinar offered funders new to and experienced in investing in local food policy a chance to explore opportunities and challenges and learn how funders might begin working in this area. Funders also heard about new resources available to support the work of local food policy councils\, and how funders can support local food policy\, a critical cornerstone for increasing access to healthy fresh foods. Speakers included: Thai Ha-Ngoc of the Henry P. Kendall Foundation\, Anne Palmer and Mark Winne of the Center for a Livable Future at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health\, and Jeffery Usher of the Kansas Health Foundation. \nRelated Content\n\nNew England Food Policy: Building a Sustainable Food System\nPresentation: Supporting Local Food Policy to Create Sustainable Access to Healthy Food – PDF document\, 1952 KB
