SUMMARY:Monitoring the Impact of the ACA (Part Two)
DESCRIPTION:Foundations continue to monitor\, track\, and evaluate the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This call built further on the recent GIH webinar\, Monitoring the Impact of the ACA. Participants took a deeper dive into the work being done and the approaches being taken and explored possibilities for coordinating efforts. Participants were encouraged to share information on their evaluation initiatives and plans. This open conversation also addressed specific issues such as focus group work being conducted; particular topics covered in surveys; ways to measure the economic impact of the ACA; and strategies for monitoring access\, affordability\, and outcomes. \nRelated Content\n\nPresentation: Monitoring the ACA (Part Two) – PDF document\, 1424 KB

SUMMARY:A Long and Dangerous Road: How Funders Can Respond to the Surge of Unaccompanied Children Migrating to the United States
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees; Grantmakers for Children\, Youth and Families; Hispanics in Philanthropy; and the International Human Rights Funders Group. \nAs recent press accounts have revealed\, thousands of children are making the dangerous journey north from Central America and Mexico without a parent or guardian. The number of unaccompanied immigrant children migrating to the United States has increased dramatically in recent years\, jumping from 6\,000 in 2011 to an anticipated 80\,000 to 120\,000 new arrivals in 2014. A complex array of federal agencies handles the care and custody of the children once they arrive in the United States\, as well as the adjudication of their immigration claims. This webinar discussed the growing humanitarian crisis and the role funders can play in responding to the needs of unaccompanied immigrant children who are being cared for in communities across the country. Visit Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees’ resource page on unaccompanied immigrant children to read more about this topic. Speakers included: Daranee Petsod of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees\, Aryah Somers of The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees\, and Maria Woltjen of The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. The call was moderated by Tara Magner of the MacArthur Foundation.

SUMMARY:Youth Wellness: Addressing Trauma and Promoting Whole Health

Head Start-Trauma Smart\, led by the Crittenton Children’s Center\, is an early childhood trauma intervention within Head Start classrooms that teaches skills and self-care techniques for responding to the emotional and learning challenges associated with trauma. SUMMARY:Prioritizing America’s Youngest Children
DESCRIPTION:Early childhood is a critical time to build lifelong health and learning. Young children do well when they are raised in supportive families and communities and participate in high-quality early childhood programs. Despite this evidence\, the United States invests considerably less money in these early years than in K-12 education. Recently the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Commission to Build a Healthier America issued its latest set of recommendations\, one of which calls for greater public and private investments in early childhood development as a way of promoting a lifetime of better health and learning. In this webinar\, speakers discussed foundation strategies that address early childhood. Speakers included: Ellen Braff-Guajardo of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Paula Braveman of the University of California\, San Francisco; Joelle-Jude Fontaine of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Kristin Schubert of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; and Jessie Rasmussen of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund. \nRelated Content\n\nPresentation: Prioritizing America’s Youngest Children – PDF document\, 3991 KB\nRWJF Issue Brief: Early Childhood Experiences Shape Health and Well-being Throughout Life – PDF document\, 1110 KB
