SUMMARY:2017 Fall Forum: Strategies for Tumultuous Times
DESCRIPTION:2017 Agenda \nWashington Marriott Georgetown | Washington\, DC \nEach fall\, GIH offers programming designed for funders with a strong interest in health policy. The Fall Forum is an excellent opportunity for grantmakers to get up-to-speed on current issues\, interact with leading thinkers\, and connect with one another. Funders return home with a deeper understanding of important topics\, an introduction to some key players\, and ideas about how to apply what they’ve learned to their work. \nThe 2017 Fall Forum served as an important opportunity to participate in comprehensive discussions about the complex and rapidly changing health policy environment. On the first day of the meeting\, a variety of high-level experts deepened participants’ understanding of key aspects of the private and public health insurance systems that are being debated and changed\, share timely updates on supporting outreach and enrollment\, and detail how coverage gaps are being addressed and managed. \nThe second day of the meeting featured a communications workshop for funders\, during which participants heard about current communication challenges in health policy and explore foundation approaches to meet those challenges. Experts shared tools funders can use in designing advocacy communications support for grantees and building digital media capacity. \nKathy Ko Chin\, President and CEO of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum delivered the fifth annual Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture\, sharing her insights on the policy and systems changes that would benefit Asian Americans\, Native Hawaiians\, and Pacific Islanders at the national\, state\, and local levels. \nRelated Content\n\nLauren LeRoy Lecture\, Kathy Ko Chin\, APIAHF – PDF document\, 8545 KB\nFall Forum 2017 Speaker Profiles – PDF document\, 286 KB\nState of Coverage Policy\, Trish Riley\, NASHP and Karen Pollitz\, KFF – PDF document\, 753 KB\nCurrent Communication Challenges in Health Policy\, Alison Betty\, Betty & Smith – PDF document\, 709 KB\nDesigning Advocacy Communications Support\, Ed Walz\, Springboard Partners – PDF document\, 11871 KB\nBuilding Digital Media Capacity\, Alison Glazer\, Whole Whale – PDF document\, 5308 KB

SUMMARY:Charting a Climate\, Health\, and Equity Agenda
DESCRIPTION:Detroit\, Michigan \nCosponsored with the Climate and Energy Funders Group\, Environmental Grantmakers Association\, Health and Environmental Funders Network\, and The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities \nEvery community faces serious health\, water\, air\, and infrastructure challenges from climate change and the forces driving it. Children\, older adults\, people with chronic illnesses\, low-income rural and urban communities\, people of color\, indigenous communities\, and immigrants are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Imagine the possibilities for Americans’ health and our climate if the people and communities most impacted mobilize with allies to gain greater control over decisions shaping health outcomes\, energy choices\, and environmental quality. \nCharting a Climate\, Health\, and Equity Agenda: Investing in Those Most Impacted to Improve Health and the Environment drew together an array of funders interested in health\, the environment\, racial and gender equity\, climate and energy\, water\, urban and rural communities\, smart growth\, and related areas to: \n\nbreak down silos and build common ground for collaboration on shared goals\,\nhear from affected communities about how they are mobilizing to improve their health and environmental quality\,\nexplore co-benefit projects making progress across a range of climate\, health\, and equity goals\,\nlearn from recent communications research about effective ways to talk about climate and health; and\nget out into Detroit neighborhoods to see how people are experiencing these issues in their lives.Stay in Detroit for a local site visit focused on climate\, health\, and equity on November 15\, and for the Health and Environmental Funders Network’s annual meeting November 15-16.

SUMMARY:Better Care for Complex Needs: Priorities for the Field
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nTo improve the health outcomes and daily lives of individuals in the United States with the most complex care needs\, five foundations—The Commonwealth Fund\, The John A. Hartford Foundation\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Peterson Center on Healthcare\, and The SCAN Foundation—are working together to accelerate health system transformation. The Playbook\, developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and informed by over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles\, case studies\, step-by-step guides\, and practical guidance\, explores the challenges facing adults with complex health and social needs and provides evidence-based or experience-informed ideas about how to address those challenges. This webinar taught us more about the development and evolution of The Playbook along with five priorities that funders may consider as they explore opportunities to improve care for people with complex health and social needs. Speakers included Marian Bihrle Johnson\, Kedar Mate\, and Catherine Mather of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and John Feather of Grantmakers In Aging.
