SUMMARY:A Call to Action for the 2020 Census
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation \nCensus Day\, April 1st\, 2020\, is only two years away. Funders discussed why the census matters and the role that philanthropy can play in ensuring a fair and accurate count. Census data drive key decisions made by government\, business\, nonprofits\, and philanthropy. Although philanthropy cannot and should not supplant the government’s responsibility to ensure a fair and accurate census\, funder engagement in support of the census is more important than ever. Funders learned about: \n\nthe current policy landscape regarding important census issues\,\nthe roles funders can play in census organizing at the national\, state\, and local levels\, and\nthe different ways funders have been convening their colleagues\, stakeholders\, and community leaders to learn about and strategize for a fair and accurate census.\n\nListeners heard from funders on how they have been engaging at the state and local levels and will leave with concrete next action steps for census engagement at your foundation and in your community. Speakers included Elina Alterman of Kansas Health Foundation\, Christian Arana of Latino Community Foundation\, Marcia Avner of Bauman Foundation\, Terri Ann Lowenthal of FCI\, and Alexie Torres-Fleming of Access Strategies Fund.

SUMMARY:When Hospitals Deliver More Than Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nProMedica\, a nonprofit health system serving 27 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan\, has a strategic focus on addressing the drivers of health for patients and communities by concentrating on the social determinants. ProMedica’s model emphasizes the importance of catalytic economic development and collaboration\, in addition to adopting practices like screening patients for food\, housing\, and other basic needs. \nProMedica has also pioneered a food clinic (prescribing food as medicine)\, operates an inner-city grocery store\, and has focused on sparking economic reinvestment in Toledo\, Ohio. In October 2017\, ProMedica announced a $50 million investment focused on neighborhood revitalization. Recently\, the health system partnered with LISC\, a community development financial institution\, to create a $25 million loan pool to support projects in distressed communities. They also cofounded the Root Cause Coalition\, with the AARP Foundation\, to reverse and end systemic health inequities. \nThis webinar was a conversation with Randy Oostra\, President and CEO of ProMedica\, about how health systems translate understanding about the social determinants of health into action. \nWebinar Recording\nRelated Content \n\nWhen Hospitals Deliver More Than Health Care Slides – PDF document\, 5869 KB
