SUMMARY:Funding for Cultural Change: Creating and Meeting the Moment
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation\, Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers\, Economic Opportunity Funders\, Environmental Grantmakers Association\, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees\, Health and Environmental Funders Network\, Neighborhood Funders’ Group\, Philanthropy New York\, United Philanthropy Forum\, and Women Donors Network \nOver the last few years\, several cultural moments\, such as #MeToo and responses to police violence\, have raised the national visibility of ongoing social justice struggles. These unique cultural moments have opened new and earnest conversations about the type of country we want to become. This discussion explored how grassroots leaders have leveraged or helped create these moments to build long-term power in their communities and considered how funders have been supporting this work thus far.

SUMMARY:Philanthropy’s Response to the Addition of a Citizenship Question to the 2020 Census
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation\, Associated Grant Makers\, Bauman Foundation\, Chesapeake Bay Funders\, Democracy Funders Collaborative Census Subgroup\, Forefront\, Funders for LGBTQ Issues\, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees\, Grantmakers Council of Rhode Island\, Hispanics in Philanthropy\, Minnesota Council of Foundations\, Philanthropy Network Greater Philadelphia\, Philanthropy New York\, Philanthropy Northwest\, Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders\, and United Philanthropy Forum \nOn June 8\, the Commerce Department (which oversees the Census Bureau) invited the public to comment on the paperwork associated with the 2020 census. The public then had 60 days–until August 7–to submit comments. This was one of the few opportunities for philanthropy to respond to the proposed addition of a citizenship question the census questionnaire. Regardless of the outcome\, these public comments will establish an important record for the public\, Congress\, and the courts to consider. During this webinar\, funders learned about: \n\nwhere the proposed citizenship question stands now and how key national stakeholder organizations are organizing to respond to it\,\nhow funders and Philanthropy Serving Organizations can sign-on to letters regarding the citizenship question and submit their own comments\, and\nhow funders can help inform their grantees about sign-on comment letters and other organizing opportunities for stakeholder groups.\n\nSpeakers included Gary Bass of the Bauman Foundation\, Maggie Osborn of United Philanthropy Forum\, and Corrine Yu of the Leadership Conference Education Fund.

SUMMARY:Replicating Global Maternal and Child Health Innovations in the United States
DESCRIPTION:As U.S. health care costs continue to rise and disparities in maternal and child health outcomes continue to widen\, there is much to be learned from countries where doing more with fewer resources is the norm. This webinar taught participants about domestic maternal and child health innovations adapted from global initiatives. The speakers identified contextual parallels between vulnerable global and U.S. communities\, and shared replicable lessons for improving breastfeeding rates\, supporting healthy nutrition for children and families\, and combating poor maternal health outcomes. Speakers included Adrianna Logalbo of 1\,000 Days; Betsy McNamara of the Transforming Birth Fund; and Mireille Posse of Hispanics in Philanthropy. \nRelated Content\n\nGlobal MCH Slideshow – PDF document\, 5672 KB

SUMMARY:The Critical Role of Medicaid for People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Medicaid covers two out of five people with disabilities in the United States\, providing access to medical care and long-term care services that help people live independently in their communities. On this webinar\, funders heard an overview of Medicaid’s role for this critical population; understood the potential impact that new policies—such as basing Medicaid eligibility on employment—may have on people with disabilities; and discussed recent delivery system changes\, such as the movement to commercial managed care. Speakers included Henry Claypool\, formerly of the Administration for Community Living at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; MaryBeth Musumeci of The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation; Vikki Wachino\, formerly of the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid; and Julie Ward of the Public Policy and Legal Advocacy Division at The Arc.

SUMMARY:Improving Health Outcomes by Connecting to the EITC: A Conversation for Funders
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with EITC Funders Network \nThe Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) aims to reduce poverty and support working families by offsetting their federal payroll and income taxes. A small but growing body of research is exploring the relationship between higher income resulting from the tax credit benefits and improved health outcomes. This research has generally focused on maternal and child health outcomes because the vast majority of EITC benefits accrue to families with young children. On this webinbar\, funders learned about the importance of EITC in improving health\, explored examples of how philanthropy is engaging in this work\, and increased cross-sectoral connections between health and economic security funders. Speakers included Kelli Komro of Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University\, Padmini Parthasarathy of The California Wellness Foundation\, and Ria Pugeda of the Consumer Health Foundation. \nRelated Content\n\nImproving Health Outcomes Slides – PDF document\, 1851 KB
