SUMMARY:Blueprint for Complex Care: Opportunities for Philanthropy in Healthcare and Social Services
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nWhen individuals with complex health and social needs encounter the health care system\, they often receive care from both medical and social service providers that is expensive\, inefficient\, and poorly coordinated. Six foundations (The Commonwealth Fund\, The John A. Hartford Foundation\, Peterson Center on Healthcare\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, The SCAN Foundation\, and Milbank Memorial Fund) are working together to address this issue and improve the quality and value of care by increasing the adoption of evidence-based interventions that improve quality and lower costs of care for those with the greatest needs. \nThe recently released Blueprint for Complex Care provides the field with clear\, actionable steps for further developing a wide range of efforts aimed at improving the lives of people with complex health and social needs and advancing the field of complex care. This webinar shared the blueprint’s recommendations for strengthening the field\, how foundations are using the blueprint in their current and future grantmaking\, and how funders can collaborate to improve the lives of those with the most complex needs. Speakers included Mark Humowiecki of National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs\, Susan Mende of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, and Kelly Pfeifer of California Health Care Foundation. \nWebinar Recording:

SUMMARY:Activity on Tap: Looking Across the Drinking Water Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Biodiversity Funders Group\, Environmental Grantmakers Association\, Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities\, and the Health and Environmental Funders Network \nCommunities across the United States are addressing drinking water challenges\, from systems coping with droughts or flooding to people troubled by their tap water’s safety or affordability. Public passion for safe\, affordable\, accessible drinking water is also fueling organizing and advocacy in and across rural and urban places. The landscape of drinking water work is broad and varied\, as are the responses being supported by foundations. In this webinar\, participants learned about a new funder guide on drinking water and discussed highlights from three hubs of activity tackling drinking water challenges. Speakers included Juliet Christian-Smith of Water Foundation\, Radhika Fox of US Water Alliance\, Tom Neltner of Environmental Defense Fund\, and Nse Witherspoon of Children’s Environmental Health Network. \n\nWebinar Recording

SUMMARY:Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: The Case for Funding Oral Health Programming
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with the Funders Oral Health Policy Group (FOHPG) \nAlthough oral health is a barometer of overall health and crucial for total well-being nearly 74 million Americans do not have access to oral health care. Barriers to oral health care are driven by a diverse range of issues\, including the oral health delivery system structure\, dental provider shortages in underserved areas\, lack of comprehensive Medicaid and Medicare dental benefits for low-income populations\, and the historical separation of oral health care from traditional primary care. \nGrantmakers In Health (GIH) and Funders Oral Health Policy Group (FOHPG) held a one-day meeting in Memphis\, Tennessee about philanthropy’s role in addressing oral health equity. This interactive meeting placed oral health in the larger context of health equity\, and focused on identifying holistic\, community-centered strategies to address oral health disparities\, and created locally representative workforces to improve care for affected populations. Funders left equipped with a framework to fund oral health programming or support oral health efforts in their primary areas of influence. \nSupport for this meeting was provided by the W.K. Speakers included Colby Dailey and Colleen Flynn of Build Healthy Places Network\, Mary Phan-Gruber of the Jefferson Regional Foundation\, and Antonia Richburg of Cone Health Foundation. \nWebinar Recording: \n \nAdditional Resources: \n\nPrinciples for Building Healthy and Prosperous Communities\nPartnerships for Health Equity and Opportunity: A Healthcare Playbook for Community Developers\nAddressing Social Determinants to Improve Patient Care and Promote Health Equity: An American College of Physicians Position Paper\n\nRelated Content: \n\nMoving Hospitals Slideshow – PDF document\, 3125 KB\nSDOH Screening Tool – Microsoft Word document\, 29 KB
