SUMMARY:Dental Therapy Authorization Landscape and Advocacy Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:This content was originally slated for the 2020 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. \nThe practice of dental therapy\, which expands the oral health workforce to include mid-level providers\, is widely recognized as an oral health equity best practice that improves access to critical oral health care and improves health outcomes for vulnerable populations as a community-based delivery model. This on-demand webinar highlights advocacy efforts to authorize dental therapy training\, licensure\, certification and ensure standardized metrics at both the state and national levels. Funders will also learn how community engagement best practices are used to inform the model and advocacy efforts. The featured speaker is Tera Bianchi of Community Catalyst. \n Dental Therapy Advocacy Landscape \nDentalTherapyAdvocacyGuide-R1 \nDentalTherapyGuidlines-R1

SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee Hour: Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Serious-Illness Care
DESCRIPTION:There are pervasive and persistent disparities throughout the U.S. health care system that have drawn philanthropic attention. However\, disparities in access to specialized care for seriously ill patients\, such as palliative care\, and completion of advanced directives have received limited attention despite these interventions’ numerous patient benefits and cost-savings. Participants joined a conversation with Kimberly Johnson\, Director of the Duke Center for REACH Equity and Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University\, and Cara James\, President and CEO of Grantmakers In Health\, about the critical challenges communities of color face in accessing serious-illness and palliative care\, how lack of access is having significant negative impacts on these communities\, and how health philanthropy can play a vital role in addressing these disparities in our care system. \nK. SUMMARY:Turning the Tide on Critical Coverage Losses
DESCRIPTION:Recent estimates confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying economic downturn are causing the most significant health insurance coverage losses in this country’s history. According to research published by the National Center for Coverage Innovation and the Census Bureau\, over five million American workers are losing health insurance since the onset of the pandemic. This is a particularly serious concern for communities of color\, which are disproportionately affected by the pandemic and experiencing deep losses in coverage at this critical time. This webinar provided a briefing on the factors that have shaped the current landscape\, what can be done to reverse these coverage losses\, and how philanthropy can make a difference for the most vulnerable members of our society. Speakers included Juliet Choi of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum\, Stan Dorn of Families USA\, Marjorie Innocent of the NAACP\, and Steven T. Lopez of UnidosUS. \nTurning the Tide on Critical Coverage Losses PPT

SUMMARY:Health Equity: A Candid Conversation with Your Peers
DESCRIPTION:Equity staff at philanthropic institutions have long supported efforts to address injustice and dismantle systemic racism. This work has intensified over the past several months as many in our nation\, heartbroken and outraged by recent and continuing acts of violence against Black people and other communities of color\, have demanded equity and justice. At the same time\, health and economic disparities compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted a broader national conversation about declaring racism a public health crisis. On this call\, staff responsible for equity work connected with peers\, identified common challenges\, exchanged potential solutions\, and built collective knowledge. This was a candid\, confidential\, and unscripted discussion designed to identify trends\, offer peer support\, and cultivate concrete partnerships\, with an eye toward collective action.
