SUMMARY:Complex Needs Through a Health Equity Lens: What Can Philanthropy Actually Do?
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nThe health and well-being of those who have faced a lifetime of structural racism are impacted much more strongly than other groups\, especially as they age; for example\, Black older people are dying from COVID-19 at 3.6 times the rate of older whites. Philanthropy has responded to many immediate needs\, but inequities will continue if the system of discrimination in the social determinants of health does not change. Strong philanthropic investment at the systems level will be required if we are to see fundamental changes. \nParticipants learned about specific efforts to link a systems approach with activities on the ground and to discuss examples of how local communities can make a difference in the lives of those that are usually left behind. Speakers included Carly Hare of Change Philanthropy and Kathryn Lawler of Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement. \nWebinar recording:

SUMMARY:Care Partners: Bridging Families\, Clinics\, and Communities to Advance Late-Life Depression Care – Lessons Learned
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging \nAccording to the National Alliance on Mental Illness\, depression affects more than 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans age 65 and older. In 2014\, Archstone Foundation launched its Depression in Late-Life Initiative\, awarding a grant to the University of Washington and the University of California\, Davis to support the Care Partners: Bridging Families\, Clinics\, and Communities to Advance Late-Life Depression Care project. Care Partners is testing innovative approaches to treat depression and address social needs through community-engaged partners working together to strengthen the involvement of family\, friends\, and community-based organizations in providing enhanced collaborative care for depressed older adults offered in the primary care setting or in the community. On this webinar\, participants joined GIH for important conversation about the successes and challenges in implementing collaborative care interventions\, the key lessons learned to date\, and next steps to improve late-life depression care. Speakers included Ladson Hinton of University of California Davis\, Laura Rath of Archstone Foundation\, and Jürgen Unützer of University of Washington.

SUMMARY:Leadership Discussion on Rural Health
DESCRIPTION:During this second conversation of GIH’s leadership series on rural health\, GIH President and CEO Cara James held a discussion with leaders to identify pressing rural health issues to address in 2021\, and which issues philanthropy is best positioned to address\, with an eye toward collective action. On this call\, the group reflected on recent events and their impact on rural communities and took a deeper dive on several issues and discussed existing initiatives in those areas and additional efforts needed from health funders. The group will continue to explore these topics in the months ahead. \nThis was the second of several conversations to improve health in rural communities. If you are interested in participating in this candid conversation\, please reach out to Ann Rodgers for more information.
