SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Advancing Health and Equity with Ballot Measures: Oregon's Drug Decriminalization and Addiction Treatment Initiative
DESCRIPTION:In the November 2020 election\, Oregon voters overwhelmingly approved Measure 110\, a ballot initiative that made it the first state in the nation to eliminate criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of drugs while greatly increasing funding and access to treatment\, recovery\, and harm reduction services. This landmark policy change represents not only a significant shift away from the criminalization of drug use disproportionately harming communities of color\, but also offers a tremendous learning opportunity on how ballot initiatives can be used to advance far-reaching health and equity goals. Listen to this Quick Take to hear more about decriminalization as an essential component to treating drug use as a health issue\, the historic campaign that brought this policy to life\, and the vision for what comes next. \n \nThis session was designed by Grantmakers In Health and supported by Open Society Foundations.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Advancing Health Equity for the Homebound
DESCRIPTION:Older adults who are homebound are often socially isolated\, have unmet care needs\, and suffer high mortality—and being homebound is not uncommon. In 2011\, data showed that more older adults were homebound than living in nursing homes. This Quick Take will highlight the epidemiology and characteristics of homebound older adults\, a population often invisible to society\, and discuss why funders should include the homebound in their efforts to advance health care equity. \n \nThis session was designed by Grantmakers In Health and supported by Grantmakers In Aging.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Closing the Gap: Evaluating Rural Communities with a Health Equity Lens
DESCRIPTION:How do health philanthropies know if their investments are addressing health equity? Closing the disparity gap? Producing meaningful change? Nationally\, rural communities face increasing health\, socioeconomic\, and geographic challenges. As philanthropy turns its focus towards this work\, it is essential to monitor and evaluate the change that foundation investments are driving. Using Healthcare Georgia Foundation’s The Two Georgias Initiative as a guiding framework\, this Quick Take will explore the role of philanthropy and intermediaries\, innovative evaluation tools and resources\, and lessons learned about what it takes to build rural community capacity to measure health equity impacts. \n \nThis session was designed by Healthcare Georgia Foundation and supported by the GIH Effective Philanthropy Fund.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Debt as a Social Determinant of Health
DESCRIPTION:Our financial security is a social determinant of health\, and debt stymies that security for individuals\, communities\, and the economy. In this Quick Take\, the Asset Funders Network will explore the burden of unmanageable debt arising from longstanding systemic inequities that degrades health and wealth for people of color. The session will also share research\, strategies\, and recommendations for philanthropy to provide financial relief\, and in turn\, improve prosperity and well-being among Black and Latinx households. \n \nThis session was designed by Asset Funders Network and supported by Missouri Foundation for Health.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Measuring What Matters to Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Many existing quality measures target disease-specific\, intermediate clinical outcomes that are not meaningful to people with complex care needs and do not effectively evaluate what is important to people. With funding from The John A. Hartford Foundation\, The SCAN Foundation\, and The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation\, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) developed an approach to individualized measurement that focuses on goals oriented towards “what matters” for a person’s health and lifestyle. This Quick Take will provide an overview of the approach—known as person-driven outcomes—and discuss how incorporating patient-driven\, specific\, and measurable goals into clinical workflows can inform a new approach to measuring health outcomes for this population. \n \nThis session was designed by Grantmakers In Health and supported by Grantmakers In Aging.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Shifting From Hate to Health: The Benefits of Leading From within Community
DESCRIPTION:The current social and political context fosters hate speech and acts of hate against Muslims and Jews. Islamophobia\, anti-Semitism\, and white nationalism are weapons of racism promoting fear and isolation and putting individuals and entire communities at risk for stress\, trauma\, isolation\, and poor health. By investing in organizations led by communities under attack—and through robust\, genuine\, and reciprocal relationships—grantee partners are shifting the focus from hate to health. In this Quick Take\, hear from Jewish and Muslim leaders\, and learn successful strategies to creating safer and more welcoming communities and drafting actionable steps for your organization. \n \nThis session was designed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation and supported by W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Conference Quick Take: Virtual Crisis Care: Rural Innovation to Mental Health Crisis Response
DESCRIPTION:About one in every 10 calls to law enforcement involves someone in a potential mental health crisis. In many communities across the country\, especially rural communities\, law enforcement are the only responder to these calls. However\, law enforcement officers often do not have the training or resources at hand to effectively help someone whose health and well-being are at stake due to mental health issues. This Quick Take will provide the nuts and bolts of how one state is piloting a statewide program to give rural law enforcement officers immediate access to mental health professionals using technology. \n \nThis session was designed by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and supported by Missouri Foundation for Health.

SUMMARY:2021 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:2021 Agenda at a Glance \nPlenary and Quick Take sessions are available under ‘Webinars and Videos.’ \n\nCONFERENCE THEME: BUILDING A JUST AND EQUITABLE FUTURE\n2020 was a turbulent year—one which illustrated numerous inequities that inhibit our ability to achieve better health through better philanthropy. These disparities are directly related to the health care system\, our public health infrastructure\, and to the social and structural factors that drive health outcomes. The challenges highlighted over the last year provide an opportunity to reimagine and restructure the way we design and implement efforts to improve health outcomes\, and philanthropic institutions are well positioned to help lead the way. \nThis year’s annual conference will provide a space for health funders to come together and share how they responded to the challenges presented in 2020\, exchange lessons learned\, and discuss how to partner with allies to implement sustainable changes that lead to better health for all. The conference will also offer an opportunity to think critically and creatively about how foundations can continue to adapt to the changing landscape to build a more just and equitable future. \n\nSocial Media: \n
