SUMMARY:Supporting Black Maternal Health and Advancing Birth Equity
DESCRIPTION:The United States has a higher rate of maternal mortality than any other developed country in the world. Driving this ranking are the significant racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality: black women are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Across the country\, philanthropy and communities have launched an all-hands-on-deck approach to this crisis\, designing policies and programs intended to reverse the high rate of black maternal mortality and improve health outcomes for women\, children\, and families. \nThis webinar explored how latest policy updates\, successful strategies to advance birth equity\, and how health philanthropy can make an impact in reducing black maternal mortality.  Speakers included Dawn Godbolt of the National Birth Equity Collective\, Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith of Cradle Cincinnati/Queens Village\, Dr. Shirley Sylvester of the Women’s Health Initiative at Johnson & Johnson\, and Kiana Trabue and Jennifer Zimmerman of bi3. \nPresentations: \nDawn Godbolt \, Dr. Shirley Sylvester\, Kiana Trabue and Jennifer Zimmerman \nRecording: \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:2021 Fall Forum
DESCRIPTION:2021 Agenda \nThe 2021 virtual GIH Fall Forum provided policy-engaged funders with information on current issues\, access to leading thinkers\, and connections with grantmaking peers. \nWelcome Session & Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture\nNovember 15\, 2021 \nDr. Alice Huan-mei Chen\, Chief Medical Officer of Covered California presented the Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture\nView the recording \nDesigning a Roadmap for an Equitable Post-COVID-19 Recovery\nView the recording: \n \n  \nNetworking Session / Get to Know Your Colleagues\nNovember 16\, 2021 \nBuilding Momentum to Advance and Institutionalize Equity\nNovember 17\, 2021 \nThere is growing awareness of the structural inequities driving health disparities in the United States\, which has led to new policies\, programs\, and people focused on health equity. At the same time\, the country remains divided on many issues\, and there is an increasingly vocal resistance to centering equity and structural discrimination in conversations about health. Given the complexity of the current moment\, how can philanthropy help communities create a new normal through initiatives that are designed to ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity to obtain their highest level of health?  In this action-oriented programming series\, participants will discuss how to: move from crisis response to long-term recovery in ways that advance equity; use narrative change as a tool to shift policy; and engage board leadership to incorporate equity as a priority in foundation programming and operations. \nSession 1 Recording \n \nSession 2 recording \n \nFrom Crisis to Care: Decriminalizing Mental Illness and Addiction\nNovember 18-19\, 2021 \nFor far too long\, behavioral health crises have been treated as a criminal justice problem instead of a public health issue. As a result\, jails and prisons have become our largest psychiatric facilities and communities of color have been disproportionately harmed by the criminalization of mental illness and drug use. Across the country\, there are growing calls to reform our crisis response systems by prioritizing harm reduction; implementing alternatives to incarceration; and utilizing mental health providers\, not law enforcement\, as first responders to behavioral health challenges. Policy and practice changes at the local\, state\, and federal level are redesigning crisis systems to respond to behavioral health needs more effectively and equitably. In this programming series\, participants will hear about community-centered decriminalization efforts; explore lessons learned from partnership work; and discuss how philanthropy can best support equitable and sustainable strategies \nSession 1 Recording \n \nSession 2 Recording \n \nSession 3 Recording \n \n40 Years and Future Focused: GIH’s New Strategic Plan\nNovember 19\, 2021 \nView the recording

SUMMARY:Legislative Opportunities to Increase Health Care Access and Coverage
DESCRIPTION:The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 is one of the largest economic relief programs in U.S. history\, which will provide billions of dollars to states\, communities\, and individuals. When considered alongside the Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill currently being proposed in Congress\, it is clear that federal legislation could soon impact nearly every aspect of the American economy\, particularly health care. This webinar discussed the key features of the American Rescue Plan Act and the Build Back Better framework—which include extending marketplace subsidies\, addressing the Medicaid coverage gap\, providing funding for clinics and health centers\, supporting consumer assistance and enforcement\, funding reinsurance and affordability programs—and discussed philanthropy’s opportunity to engage in the resulting work in communities across the country. Larry Levitt of the Kaiser Family Foundation moderated a panel of speakers that included Frederick Isasi of Families USA\, Sarah Lueck of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities\, Edwin Park of the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute\, and Hemi Tewarson of the National Academy for State Health Policy. \nNovember 30 Webinar Resources \nRecording:
