The Mt. Sinai Health Foundation is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and highly collaborative Vice President, responsible for all aspects of its grantmaking strategy and operations. The position will supervise a program staff of 2-3 program officers and a grants/database manager and will report to the Foundation’s President. The Vice President will be part of an interdependent professional team responsible for implementing the Foundation’s grantmaking mission.
The Vice President plays an integral role in the management of the Foundation’s quarterly, responsive grantmaking. They will also work with other Foundation staff and multiple external stakeholders across sectors in devising and executing plans for strategic investments that improve health, particularly for underserved or marginalized populations.
Compensation & Benefits
The Mt. Sinai Health Foundation offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including health, vision, dental, and group term life insurance; flexible spending accounts; 403(b) with employer contribution; holidays and vacation; and opportunities for professional development. The salary range for this position is $150,000 – $200,000.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities include:
- With the President, develop grantmaking strategies for improving the health of the people of Greater Cleveland with an emphasis on low-income communities.
- Provide communitywide leadership to address health disparities in communities of color and other verifiable, research-based health issues facing Greater Cleveland.
- Determine how the Foundation can utilize its donor-designated funds for teaching and research medicine to bring faster cures from the laboratory to the bedside, enhancing Cleveland’s prominence in academic medicine and bioscience, and growing the biotech sector of the Cleveland economy.
- With Foundation partners, lead efforts to both advocate for and work alongside government to achieve policy change that will improve the health of Greater Clevelanders and Ohioans.
- Working with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and other entities, identify ways in which the Foundation can improve health in the Cleveland Jewish Community.
- Supervise program staff as they counsel grant-seekers on grant requests and general information inquiries.
- Assess the quality and feasibility of grant proposals, budgets, and applicants’ capacity to achieve proposed objectives.
- Develop written funding recommendations and present orally to senior staff and the Board.
- Facilitate in-person site visits with prospective grantee-partners and members of the Board to inform grant-making recommendations.
- Provide technical assistance, where needed, to grantee-partners throughout grant implementation.
- Serve as a liaison between grant-making and operations staff to facilitate grants management.
- Assist with research and analysis in the development of strategic and proactive grantmaking.
- Assist with the convening of public, private, and philanthropic organizations and development of partnerships that set community-wide agendas and leverage cross-sector investments at-scale.
- Analyze past and present grant partnerships to seek new opportunities for grantmaking.
- Produce reports on a variety of internally and externally facing projects.
- Contribute to efforts to evaluate and continuously learn from the Foundation’s grantmaking and other health improvement activities.
- Remain current on emerging and critical trends in public health and health policy, philanthropy, the nonprofit sector, and Foundation program areas.

They will have awareness of trends in the external environment that may impact the Foundation and health philanthropy and a commitment to primary prevention and early intervention. Working in close collaboration with the staff and board, this leader will help to achieve the greatest possible impact through the Foundation’s grantmaking and will have deep interest in addressing the needs of the communities Mt. Sinai serves. With compassion and a commitment to racial equity and social justice, they will have a broad understanding of the tools of community-building, including organizing, issue framing, and advocacy. The Vice President will seek to implement creative and strategic grantmaking to enhance the impact of those tools. This leader will inspire and motivate others and exhibit a wide-ranging curiosity and interest in Cleveland.

The Vice President will have a deep understanding of the key issues surrounding health, policy, and the health of the urban community. They will have a demonstrated ability to navigate these issues diplomatically and an understanding of the policy-making process and the political dynamics. The Vice President will have expectational capacity to analyze information and translate into sound, well-organized plans of action. With strong analytic skills, they will have the ability to think creatively and collaboratively about the broad goals of the Foundation, while remaining focused on details and follow-through. An effective problem-solver, the Vice President will have the self-awareness to ask for help when needed and the willingness to ask difficult questions and challenge assumptions.

They will be a demonstrated team player and will be a key leader in Cleveland and in the national foundation community. This leader will be seen as a trusted advisor to grantees and other organizations, working to support health and policy in Cleveland and beyond. It is imperative that they treat others with respect and always stay true to the values of the Foundation. Moreover, the ideal candidate is an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics, and values; and someone who can be trusted without reservation.
Communication
The Vice President will be an exceptional communicator. They will have superior written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and succinctly under time pressure and to make well-organized, strong verbal presentations. The Vice President will be able to operate in a fast-paced work environment and adapt to changing timelines and priorities. They will have an ability to translate complex concepts into simple and compelling narratives and will exhibit intellectual curiosity, approachability, and openness to input from others. This leader will be able to work independently and as a team member in a collegial atmosphere.
The ideal candidate will have a public health, health policy, and/or human services background. Familiarity with any or all the Foundation’s grantmaking areas is desirable. Familiarity with the workings of the organized Jewish community is a plus.
