Public Health Modernization: How Funders Can Support Health Departments to Advance Health Equity

Thursday, February 24, 2022, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET

COVID-19 has exposed significant fractures in the nation’s public health system. Local and state health departments play a pivotal role in advancing health equity, addressing public safety, and promoting better health for all, however historical underfunding of governmental public health has made it challenging to mitigate the effects of the current pandemic. The results of this disinvestment is often felt most acutely by communities of color and low-income people, making a recommitment to public health both an equity and racial justice issue. As we enter the third year of the pandemic, funders, policymakers, and governmental health officials have an opportunity to prioritize investment in health departments for the future. The Bipartisan Policy Center’s recent report, Public Health Forward: Modernizing the U.S. Public Health System, outlines actionable steps that can help guide investments and priorities for the next five years.

This webinar explored how health funders can advance health equity by supporting governmental public health and collaborating with health departments.  Speakers included Brittany Giles-Cantrell of the de Beaumont Foundation, Judy Monroe of the CDC Foundation, Anand Parekh of the Bipartisan Policy Center, Brandon Skidmore of the Sunflower Foundation, and Kathy Talkington of The Pew Charitable Trusts.
