COVID-19: Impact on Care for Persons with Serious Illness

People living with serious illness, the majority of whom are also older adults, are at the highest-risk for contracting COVID-19. Already facing many daily challenges, these vulnerable people and their families are finding that barriers to care are being exacerbated by the epidemic. This “new normal” will have far reaching consequences for this population, their caregivers, and the health care system, with disproportionate impacts on communities of color and low-income communities. Participants learned more about how seriously ill persons and their caregivers are being affected, the short- and long-term repercussions for health access and disparities, the implications for end-of-life care and grieving, and what providers and health systems can do. Speakers and participants also discussed what philanthropy can do to support individuals, families, providers, and the health care system now and in the future. Speakers included Brynn Bowman of Center to Advance Palliative Care, Betty Ferrell of City of Hope Medical Center, and Cynthia Carter Perrilliat of Alameda County Care Alliance.
