The Box Problem: Why Health Philanthropy Keeps Missing 34 Million Americans
Karabi Acharya
A few years ago, I sat down to fill out a routine intake form at a doctor’s office. I got to the race and ethnicity question and did what I have done since I was a child: I paused. Not because I didn’t know who I am, but because the form didn’t know what to do with who I am. Black or White. Asian or Hispanic. Choose one. I am Indian and White, and I have spent my whole life being asked to leave part of myself in the waiting room.

Lessons from a Year of Disruption: What’s Worked So Far as We Help Michigan Prepare for H.R. 1
Neel Hajra, CEO, Michigan Health Endowment Fund
Kari Sederburg, Vice President, Programs, Michigan Health Endowment Fund
By now, the health philanthropy field is familiar with the potential harms posed by H.R. 1, the budget reconciliation act signed into law in 2025. In Michigan, possible impacts from the legislation include up to 355,000 people losing Medicaid coverage, $32 billion in projected reduced federal Medicaid spending over the next decade, up to 796,000 families with reduced or lost SNAP benefits, and up to $2.3 billion in reduced annual provider tax payments to hospitals.

We Didn’t Stop: Leading with Purpose When the System Stepped Back
Ebony C. Barney, Vice President of National Service/AmeriCorps Program Director, The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis
Jason Grisell, President and CEO, The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis
Abby Pequignot, Executive Director, Acts of Kindness
The notice came the way these things now tend to come: abruptly, in writing, and without a transition plan. In April 2025, Public Health AmeriCorps programs were terminated nationally alongside about 900 other AmeriCorps programs. Funding halted. AmeriCorps service members who had built their careers and households around a year of community health service were left waiting for answers no one could give them. Organizations across the country scrambled.

Healing Takes Practice: Reaching People Is Only the Beginning
Molly Baldwin, Founder and CEO, Roca, Inc.
Jennifer Clammer, Executive Director, Roca Impact Institute
Allie Maynard, Strategy Advisor
Violence is increasingly understood as a public health problem. That shift has changed the way communities respond—moving the conversation beyond policing and criminal justice and toward prevention, intervention, and the conditions that put people at risk. But treating violence as a health problem also requires us to reckon with trauma.

Welcoming and Belonging: Drivers for Equity and Growth
Carla Gibson, Vice President, Programs, REACH Healthcare Foundation
Rachel Peric, Executive Director, Welcoming America
Greg Valdovino, Vice President, Welcoming & Belonging, Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce
More than a decade ago, leadership at REACH Healthcare Foundation began exploring how a community would function if it truly embraced welcoming and belonging for immigrant and refugee populations. The mid-sized Midwest philanthropic foundation sought to invest in a plan to reveal, then address, the systemic barriers impacting Kansas City’s efforts of inclusion for all members of the community.

A New Path for Philanthropy: Supporting Oral Health Through Community Partnerships
Sumayo Mohamed, Associate Program Officer, Prevention, Arcora Foundation
Catherine Seneviratne, Sr. Program Manager, Prevention, Arcora Foundation
Steve Metcalf, Strategic Communications Manager, Arcora Foundation
Rochelle Smith, Communications Specialist, Arcora Foundation
Good nutrition is essential to good oral as well as overall health. A community-based organization in central Washington state called APOYO shares this belief with Arcora Foundation. Beyond food and nutrition services, the organization has long supported immigrant and Latinx families with culturally relevant outreach, advocacy, and resource navigation. But during the summer of 2025, their ability to support communities was in jeopardy.

“Philanthropy has a powerful opportunity to not only fill in gaps that address immediate needs but to also help craft a healthier future through a collaborative approach to long-term structural and systemic change. Direct services are often critical to community health; the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg funds such services and will continue to do so as long as our community requires them.”

If you are interested in participating, please contact Ky Moultrie at kmoultrie@gih.org.

Submit a Session Proposal for the 2027 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy
|
|
We invite you to submit a session proposal for the 2027 Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy, From Meetings to Movements: Transforming Health, which will be held in person in Chicago, Illinois, from June 28 to July 1, 2027. The moment requires us to develop new skills, break out of our silos, and work together in new ways. Proposals are due October 30, 2026.
