Given the importance of the built environment for supporting healthy communities, Grantmakers In Health and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation cosponsored a National Green Schoolyards Summit. This national gathering, hosted by the Healthy Schools Campaign and Openlands, brought together practitioners, experts, and supporters involved in transforming schoolyards into green spaces that encourage physical activity, play, learning, and engagement with nature, focusing on large scale transformation in urban settings. This meeting was cosponsored with W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The summit focused on:

  • how to leverage the promise of green schoolyards for the betterment of our nation’s schools and communities,
innovative public/private partnerships that are establishing large-scale green schoolyard initiatives,
  • how strong partnerships and school/community engagement at every step of the process can support long-term project sustainability, and
  • best practices for leveraging multisector funding to support green schoolyard initiatives and discuss relevant policy opportunities.

For more information about the summit, please contact Rochelle Davis at the Healthy Schools Campaign.
