Overview
Grantmakers In Health (GIH) produces a number of regular publications dedicated to news and information for funders whose grantmaking focuses on health, including monthly newsletters like the GIH Bulletin and the GIH Health Policy Update, and ongoing series like Philanthropy @ Work, Views from the Field, and Grantmaker Focus profiles.
The following is a list of GIH publications and specific submission guidelines for each.
Views from the Field
GIH's Views from the Field series is a forum for funders and other experts to share insights on health and health philanthropy, including topics such as lessons learned from grantee projects, innovative approaches to grantmaking, details of successful partnerships, and topics related to the practical work of health philanthropy.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be substantive, offering detailed reflections from the author’s work as a grantmaker, lessons from grantee programs, or related topics. We only accept submissions original to GIH—we do not accept reprints of blog posts, op-eds, or other content. You can view examples of recent Views from the Field articles here. The ideal submission provides substantive insights into how health philanthropy should approach its work, and readers should come away from the article with ideas for how to improve their own grantmaking. It is recommended that authors first submit a brief pitch to Jeff Barrus, GIH Communications Director (jbarrus@gih.org) before sending their full submission.
- Word count: no more than 1,500 words, including titles and subheads.
- Simple figures, tables, and charts are acceptable for visual interest.
- Subheads and bulleted lists often improve both readability and the look of the final product.
- We can only include photographs when the author holds the rights for their use; third-party photo subscription service licenses are not transferable from one organization to another for publication.
- Please avoid attributing quotes to the authors of the article within the text—quotations from outside experts and other relevant parties are acceptable.
The final article will be edited by GIH communications and program staff, as needed, to assure clarity, relevance to our audience, and consistency with GIH style conventions
In some cases, we will conduct an interview and use the transcript to create a Views from the Field article in a question and answer (Q&A) format. Q&As are typically longer than 1000 words and the process includes scheduling an interview and drafting a transcript for the interviewee’s review.
Citations and References
Assertions of fact and references to specific sources should be cited in the text in the following format:
- The number of plans available to the Medicare population triples between 1990 and 1997 (Author Year).
Reference lists, when necessary, should appear at the end of articles in this format:
- Books and Reports: Author’s full name, last name first. Title. Publisher Location: Publisher, Date. URL.
- Articles: Author’s full name, last name first. “Article Title.” Journal Title. Volume, Issue Number (Date): page number range. URL.
- Websites: Website. “Webpage Title.” Date. URL.
- Blog Entries: Author’s full name, last name first, “Title,” Name of blog (blog) Publication (if applicable), Date, URL.
Eligibility
We primarily accept Views from the Field submissions from active GIH Funding Partners. We also welcome submissions from federal, state, and local government agencies, academics, health nonprofits, and others when relevant to health philanthropy. Promotional content is strongly discouraged and is unlikely to be accepted for publication.

Grantmaker Profiles
GIH’s Grantmaker Profiles series offers high-level portraits of GIH Funding Partners, including their giving priorities and highlights of their partnership with GIH. We feature a wide range of funders, from family foundations to corporate giving programs to conversion foundations.
Eligibility
Only GIH Funding Partners are eligible to be featured in a Grantmaker Profile. As the series is dedicated to grantmakers, philanthropy-serving organizations and philanthropic advisers are not eligible to participate in the series.
Submission Guidelines
Most Grantmaker Profiles are invitation-only, however, we will consider requests for inclusion from GIH Funding Partners. The editorial process involves completing a brief questionnaire about the featured grantmaker’s work and working in collaboration with the GIH editorial team on the final profile. Grantmaker Profiles average around 750 words. Please contact Miranda Wesley, GIH Communications Specialist (mwesley@gih.org), for more information.
