Foundation Giving Increased Modestly in 2008 Despite Economic Turmoil

The Foundation Center’s annual Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates, 2009 Edition provides an overview of foundation grantmaking in 2008. Despite economic turmoil, the nation’s 75,000 grantmaking foundations increased giving by about $1.2 billion in 2008 to $45.6 billion, or approximately 2.8 percent. The 2009 report suggests, however, that overall 2009 giving will decline “in the range of the high single digits to low double digits” due to record declines in foundation assets. The report also provides 2008 giving trends for three distinct types of foundations: independent, corporate, and community.
