Program Related Investments

Baxter, Christie I., Program-Related Investments: A Technical Manual for Foundations (Indianapolis, IN: Wiley Publishing, 1997). Program-related investments (PRIs) are hybrid grants/loans made by foundations to charities. They allow foundations to stretch their limited funds further. This book provides foundations with guidelines for evaluating PRIs, monitoring grant recipients, and tracking returned funds. Available for purchase on-line at www.wiley.com.

The Foundation Center, The PRI Directory: Charitable Loans and Other Program-Related Investments by Foundations (New York, NY: 2003). This directory lists PRI providers and includes suggestions on how to seek out and manage PRIs. The foundation listings include funder name and state; recipient name, city, and state; and a description of the project funded. It also includes indexes to guide PRI seekers to records by foundation/recipient location, subject/type of support, and recipient name, as well as an index to officers, donors, and trustees. Proxy Voting

MacKerron, Conrad, Unlocking the Power of the Proxy: How Active Foundation Proxy Voting can Protect Endowments and Boost Philanthropic Missions (New York, NY: Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, 2004). This report features a step-by-step process to assist foundations in developing proxy voting guidelines. It contains development and implementation recommendations, as well as a resource section that provides sample voting policies and other resources.

Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, Proxy Season Preview: Helping Foundations Align Mission and Investment (New York, NY: 2006). This publication highlights social and environmental issues that are directly relevant to the missions of foundations. It seeks to make foundations more aware of important upcoming proxy votes and to ensure that they vote in an informed manner.
