What:

Foundation resources are scarce relative to both philanthropy’s aims and society’s needs. Effective philanthropy, therefore, levers resources as fully as possible, including impact investment strategies, which offer funders tremendous power to reach a type or scale of social impact not achieved through grantmaking alone.

Last month, GIH released Guide to Impact Investing, which presents a framework to help funders think strategically about the potential of impact investing, part of a growing practice that incorporates environmental, social, and governance criteria into investment decisionmaking. The guide provides an overview of what impact investing is and how it may enhance foundation work, steps to plan and implement an impact investing program, investment options, and potential challenges.

On this audioconference, participants heard Lisa Richter of GPS Capital Partners, as well as Philip Belcher and Margaret Laws, who have used impact investing strategies as tools to help achieve their foundations’ missions.
