Food Is Medicine: Research, Policy, & State of the Field
October 13, 2017 3:00 pm Eastern Time
Cosponsored with Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders
In response to the strong links between poor nutrition and many illnesses, community-based organizations and the philanthropic community have developed a range of innovative efforts to provide healthy, nutritionally appropriate food to prevent or address specific health conditions. Join this webinar to learn about the "food is medicine" approach and its historical roots, the state of the science, details of a new three-year study funded by California’s legislature, and how "food is medicine" has evolved into a national effort to make medically-tailored meals an essential health benefit. Participants will then discuss what funders can do to incorporate a “food is medicine” approach to their grantmaking, how programs and practices can be replicated and scaled up, and what can be done to support the movement locally and at the state level. Speakers include Cathryn Couch of Ceres Community Project, Melody Meyer of United Natural Foods Foundation, Rita Nguyen of UCSF School of Medicine, and Alissa Wassung of Food Is Medicine Coalition.
