When Hospitals Deliver More Than Health Care

Cosponsored with Grantmakers In Aging

ProMedica, a nonprofit health system serving 27 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, has a strategic focus on addressing the drivers of health for patients and communities by concentrating on the social determinants. ProMedica’s model emphasizes the importance of catalytic economic development and collaboration, in addition to adopting practices like screening patients for food, housing, and other basic needs.

ProMedica has also pioneered a food clinic (prescribing food as medicine), operates an inner-city grocery store, and has focused on sparking economic reinvestment in Toledo, Ohio. In October 2017, ProMedica announced a $50 million investment focused on neighborhood revitalization. Recently, the health system partnered with LISC, a community development financial institution, to create a $25 million loan pool to support projects in distressed communities. They also cofounded the Root Cause Coalition, with the AARP Foundation, to reverse and end systemic health inequities.

This webinar was a conversation with Randy Oostra, President and CEO of ProMedica, about how health systems translate understanding about the social determinants of health into action.
