Applying Lessons from the HIV/AIDS Epidemic to the Opioid Crisis

The nation’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic provides important historical perspectives and lessons for addressing today’s opioid overdose and addiction crisis. The strategies, setbacks, and experience during the early days of the HIV epidemic can help inform effective approaches to current substance use disorder challenges. This webinar had a discussion on how issues of access, equity, funding, policy, and stigma have impacted governmental and philanthropic responses to public health epidemics. The speakers provided an update on the current data related to the opioid and HIV syndemics. Speakers included Greg Millet of amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research; Julie Patterson of the AIDS Funding Collaborative; and Monique Tula of the Harm Reduction Coalition.
