CalAIM, Street Medicine, and Homeless Services

Wednesday, March 8th from 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST

Cosponsored by Southern California Grantmakers and Funders Together to End Homelessness

The California Department of Health Care Services is currently implementing California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM), a multiyear initiative intended to fundamentally alter how crucial health services are provided by reforming the state’s Medicaid program (Medi-Cal), particularly for the at-risk populations that philanthropy supports. CalAIM will require significant investments in network infrastructure, capacity-building, and patient outreach and engagement to be successful.

This webinar focused on the intersection of CalAIM and street medicine—an emerging movement to provide direct care services to homeless individuals in the community wherever they are, as opposed to requiring treatment in clinic or hospital settings. The philosophy behind street medicine aligns well with CalAIM’s intention to prioritize individuals with complex needs and integrate Medi-Cal more seamlessly with other social service programs. Participants learned about implementation, the experiences of practitioners in the field, and ways philanthropy can be a collaborative partner in the process.
