Opportunities for Philanthropic Investment in Rural Connectivity and Broadband

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the crucial roles that robust broadband services and connectivity play in employment, health, and education, especially in rural areas. This basic infrastructure is an essential building block for economic development and a critical social determinant of health. Federal funds for broadband expansion will begin flowing next year, but philanthropic organizations must be ready to lead cross-cutting work that will bring internet connectivity to rural populations facing health disparities and economic challenges.
During this webinar, Appalachia Funders Network and Grantmakers In Health explored investment models from place-based foundations that have addressed poor connectivity in their predominantly rural communities. Presenters included Susan Beaudry of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, Shirley Bloomfield of the Rural Broadband Association, Jennifer Danic of the Steuben County Community Foundation, and Kerry Pigman of the Athens County Foundation.
