Trends in Routine Vaccination and Preventive Services for Children

April 13, 2022 – 12:00 Noon Eastern

Early data suggest that rates of routine childhood immunization and well-child visits declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, and with significant variation among different demographic and socioeconomic groups. While some data suggest the rates may be recovering, many fear that these disruptions could have long-term consequences for communicable disease prevention, health screenings, and other preventive care, especially among populations already experiencing health disparities. Insufficient or lagging data have made it difficult to fully assess these trends or to design policies, interventions, and monitoring to address these challenges.

A robust conversation was held on evidence to date about missed immunizations and well-child visits, gaps in data, and implications for children’s health and public health. The discussion highlighted state-level approaches, as part of a menu of opportunities for philanthropic partners interested in research, advocacy, education, and community engagement. Presenters included Helen DuPlessis and Rebecca Mendoza of Health Management Associates, David Wedemeyer of Health Management Associates, and Michelle Fiscus of the National Academy for State Health Policy.
