Virtual Coffee Hour: Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Serious-Illness Care

There are pervasive and persistent disparities throughout the U.S. health care system that have drawn philanthropic attention. However, disparities in access to specialized care for seriously ill patients, such as palliative care, and completion of advanced directives have received limited attention despite these interventions’ numerous patient benefits and cost-savings. Participants joined a conversation with Kimberly Johnson, Director of the Duke Center for REACH Equity and Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University, and Cara James, President and CEO of Grantmakers In Health, about the critical challenges communities of color face in accessing serious-illness and palliative care, how lack of access is having significant negative impacts on these communities, and how health philanthropy can play a vital role in addressing these disparities in our care system.
