Medicaid: Protect and Defend

Dec 5, 2024, 12:00 pm Eastern

Medicaid is the vital backbone of our publicly funded health care system: it is the largest federal source of funding flowing to state budgets, it covers nearly half of all children and births, and it is the largest funder of long-term care services, serving an aging and/or disabled population. Legislative proposals are being discussed that may severely cap or cut Medicaid, and these policy changes are likely to move very quickly in 2025. Participants learned about what policy changes and funding cuts are possible with the incoming presidential administration and the 119th U.S. Congress. Presenters shared reflections and suggested opportunities for funders to protect and defend this vital program. Speakers included Joan Alker and Edwin Park of Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families and Hemi Tewarson of the National Academy for State Health Policy.
