GIH Integrative Health Funders Network

Who:

  • Kevin Berry, Vice President, Samueli Institute
  • Catharine Grimes, Director, Corporate Philanthropy, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation
  • Bob Roth, Vice President, David Lynch Foundation

What:

The health considerations of military personnel, veterans, and their families can be quite different than those of civilians. For example, they may have additional or different nutritional needs, as well as exposure to rare chemicals and diseases. They are also at increased risk for substance abuse, traumatic brain and bodily injuries, and behavioral health concerns due to the psychological toll of combat.

On this webinar, participants learned more about innovation approaches to health and wellness for military members, veterans, and their families; why this issue is important; and why foundations are investing in it.

Kevin Berry of the Samueli Institute discussed research on integrative approaches to military and veteran care. Bob Roth of the David Lynch Foundation described the foundation’s Operation Warrior Wellness program. Catharine Grimes of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation explored how foundations that do not traditionally fund complementary and alternative medicine might add some of these innovative programs to their funding portfolios.
