This was the first virtual convening of a four-part series where participants learned about the challenges in health philanthropy and social justice. Leaders of the field ensured authentic community engagement in their initiatives and uncovered how they could collectively move towards an inclusive approach to health philanthropy.

During our first session, Dr. Cara James, President and CEO of Grantmakers In Health, Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, and Dr. Alonzo Plough, Vice President of Research-Evaluation-Learning at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, dove into the challenges that health funders grappled with as they worked to build trust and partner with community organizations to achieve better health for all. As we continued through the workshop, the speakers delved into the internal and external factors that influenced how communities and health philanthropy engaged with each other. They broke down these factors and provided a clear understanding of what drove community involvement. The closing session offered actionable steps that health philanthropy could take to meaningfully involve communities and share power. This was not just about checking boxes—it was about fostering real, authentic partnerships that could drive lasting change.

This four-part virtual learning series was hosted in collaboration with Partners for Advancing Health Equity (P4HE Collaborative), a research learning collaborative that promotes research, learning, and collaboration across sectors to advance health equity, and Grantmakers In Health (GIH), a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational organization dedicated to helping foundations and corporate giving programs improve the health of all people.
