Census and Redistricting: Past, Present, and Future Roles for Health Funders

Think the census and redistricting are in the rear-view mirror? Think again! Key decisions about redistricting and the decennial census are being made now—which is precisely why health funders need to keep these issues front and center. Bolstered by the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Allen v. Milligan, litigation is underway across the country, with at least 38 cases challenging redistricting maps that discriminate against communities of color. As these cases are being decided, the groundwork is also being laid for the 2030 census with important implications for the collection of racial and ethnic data and the addition of questions related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Participants joined this webinar to explore lessons from the 2020 census and redistricting cycle, learn about current opportunities to advance equity, and prepare for future challenges requiring the collaborative engagement of health funders. Speakers included Gary Bass of the Census Equity Initiative and Fair Representation in Redistricting, Stacey Carless of the NC Counts Coalition, and Carolyn Miller and Jack Temple of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
