The Crucial Role of Philanthropy in Nurturing Equitable Local Journalism
In an era marked by profound societal divisions, the role of local media in fostering democratic health stands as a cornerstone of informed civic engagement. From critical issues like health care and housing to economic opportunity and climate impacts, local journalism is the bedrock upon which communities build their understanding and response. Yet, the field faces challenges beyond the well-documented financial crisis facing local newsrooms, encompassing deep-rooted inequities in newsroom composition and the narratives they convey.

Day 3 – Looking Ahead: A Year of Bold Action
The final day of the 2024 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy doubled down on a theme we’ve seen throughout our time in Portland. Even if you fund a specific program or issue area, your philanthropy has broader and more profound impacts. Throughout the conference, attendees were encouraged to approach their philanthropy in innovative and new ways. We are excited to hear about your courageous steps to widen your viewpoints, advocacy, and philanthropy in the weeks and months ahead.
Day 2 – Learning from Philanthropy’s Courageous Leaders
On Day 2 of the GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy, the sun emerged and highlighted Portland’s natural beauty. Attendees kicked off this warm summer day with a power walk, networking breakfasts, breakout sessions, and quick takes before the annual Terrance Keenan and Andy Hyman Awards Plenary Luncheon, which honored two incredible leaders in health philanthropy and equity.

Survey Findings: Perceptions of Health Funders
In July and August 2025, Grantmakers In Health (GIH) conducted research to help health funders better understand how they are viewed by the public. The research included an online survey of engaged voters nationwide and an online focus group with Washington, DC, policy professionals.
An overview of the survey and online focus group findings is now available to all GIH Funding Partners. In addition, this overview was presented on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at the 2025 GIH Health Policy Exchange in Arlington, VA.
