2010 GIH Annual Meeting on Health Philanthropy

Access downloadable attachments >
Wednesday March 10, 2010 – Friday March 12, 2010 Location: Orlando, Florida
There have been enormous changes in the economy and financial sector over the past year. The mortgage crisis, volatile stock market, and job losses have taken a serious toll on the nation and our most vulnerable communities. These challenges, however, have been accompanied by new opportunities for change. The current political environment is ripe with possibilities for health reform, building the capacity of our public health system, and strengthening the health and social service safety net.

Today it is more important than ever for grantmakers to sustain their roles as change agents, even if this means rethinking some strategies for promoting change in the short term. Now is the time for foundations to demonstrate their true measure and impact. It is a time for funders to be bold, creative, and willing to take risks in how they conduct their work and understand their mission.

Taking Risks at a Critical Time will be a different kind of GIH annual meeting. Like a retreat, it will provide multiple opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions, and sessions will be designed to encourage direct and open exchange.

**This meeting is open to staff and trustees of grantmaking organizations and corporate giving programs only.**

Annual Meeting Plenary Sessions

Taking Risks and Seizing Opportunities
Wednesday, March 10, 3:30 - 4:45 p.m.
The times are rich with both risks and opportunities for health grantmakers. The ongoing effects of the recession and the prominence of health care reform on the national agenda have been just some of the challenges of the past year. The opening plenary will launch our discussion of the roles grantmakers can take as risk takers. GIH President Lauren LeRoy will open with remarks that frame the 2010 meeting's dynamic program.

Susan Sayers, vice president of institutional partnerships at Partners In Health, will update this year's annual meeting attendees during Wednesday's plenary on ongoing aid efforts in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Haiti, the long-term effort required to improve impoverished conditions that existed long before the earthquake struck, and constructive roles foundations can and are taking to help Haitians make progress after the devastation.

Len Nichols, director, health policy program at the New America Foundation, will then reflect on the current state of play in health care reform, what was won and lost, how things are likely to unfold, and what funders should be paying closest attention to in the coming months and years.

Grantmaking through the Lens of Social Justice Thursday, March 11, 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.
What does it take to bring about lasting change in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people? At The Atlantic Philanthropies, it requires addressing root causes of social injustice, focusing on advocacy for change rather than filling service gaps, and challenging policies and institutions that systematically exclude or disadvantage people. It also means building on the strengths of individuals, organizations, communities, and movements to advocate effectively; supporting institutions and leaders who can work for progressive change over the long haul; and working with government to advance goals. Atlantic Philanthropies CEO Gara LaMarche will share his thoughts about current challenges and opportunities facing philanthropy and discuss how foundations can take the risks necessary to join forces with those who need change the most.

Local Action to Save Lives: Where Do We Go From Here? Friday, March 12, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Dr. Christopher Murray's groundbreaking Eight Americas research revealed previously unknown patterns of disparities by race, gender, and county in the United States. In this plenary he will discuss new findings about patterns of risk behaviors (such as smoking and drinking) at the local level and will suggest what funders can do to stimulate local action to reverse preventable causes of death.
